Ideas And Concepts:

Idea One:

One Of My Ideas For The Final Major Project Is That I Would Like To Create A Podcast Series On Different Directors And Their Style. This Will Have Around Three To Four Episodes That Will Focus On A New Director Each Episode. I Am Not Completely Sure What Directors I Want To Focus On Yet But I Have Thought About It And Came Up With Some Ideas Of Who I Might Like To Include And Do Some More Research On. For Example, Directors Like Emerald Fennell, Ti West, Greta Gerwig And Jordan Peele. With These Directors I Would Like To Include Some Representational Issues Or Political Aspects That Might Surround Them In A Specific Section Of The Podcast. From The Directors That I Am Thinking About An Example Includes The Representation Issue Of The Difference Between Male Directors And Female Directors, How Female Directors Often Have Less Opportunities And Less Critical Acclaim Than Male Directors. Another Example Is The Political Issue Of How The Horror Genre Is Often Overlooked For Critical Acclaim Compared To Other Genres. For The Actual Format Of The Podcast, I Would Like To Follow Quite A Few Of The Stereotypical Podcast Conventions While Also Putting My Own Personality Into It. This Will Include Aspects Like A Set Intro And Outro, Theme Music And Interviews That Are Related To The Director And The Topic That I Am Talking About. On Top Of This I Would Like To Film One Of The Episodes Of My Podcast To Create Almost Like A Video Podcast. I Would Like To Do This So I Could Almost Give A Behind The Scenes Look Into The Creation Of The Podcast, This Can Show The Process Of Recording The Podcast And The Set Up Of Equipment That I Use To Do This.

Idea Two:

Another One Of My Ideas For The Final Major Project Is That I Would Like To Create A Podcast On The Topic Of If The Horror Genre Is Losing Its Creativity. There Are A Lot Of Horror Films That Are Viewed As B-Movies Or Cheap Horror Films Some Of These Are Creative While The Others Aren’t As Creative. Something That Has Become Popular In This Sub-Genre Is Films That Have Come From Intellectual Property Which Has Been Released To Public Domain For Example The Grinch Or Winnie The Pooh. I Would Like To Focus On And Explore Whether The Horror Genre Is Losing Its Creativity And Keep Releasing The Same Type Of Films. I Will Look At A Wide Range Of Horror Films Such As Mainstream Horror Films, Indie Horror Films And B-Movie Type Horror Films To Then Compare Them To Each Other To See If Horror Has Lost All Of Its Creativity. I Would Like This Podcast To Be More Of A Talking Podcast And Would Like To Have Someone Else On The Podcast With Me So That It Can Feel More Like A Conversation Or A Debate. I Also Don’t Want It To Really Feel Like A Stereotypical Podcast And Will Probably Only Have An Intro And Outro To Have Some Sort Of Structure To Know When The Podcast Has Started And When It Has Ended. For The Rest Of The Podcast, I Would Prefer For It To Be More Like A Conversation And Overall, An Exploration Of The Topic Which Would Include Other People’s Opinions, Rather Than Being An Informative Podcast On This Topic.

Influences/Inspirations:

Podcasts:

One Of The First Things That I Did As Part Of The Influences And Inspiration Section Was Finding Two Different Podcast That I Would Like To Listen And I Think Would Help When I Go Onto Create My Own. I Already Had An Idea About One Of The Podcasts That I Wanted To Listen To As I Have Been Meaning To Listen To It For Ages. However, This Was A Podcast That Didn’t Really Relate To The Chosen Topic But I Felt That It Would Be A Good Podcast To Listen To For Influencing And Inspiring My Own. As This Podcast Didn’t Relate To The Chosen Topic, I Decided That I Was Going To Look For A Podcast That Was A Bit Closer To This. I Went Online To Search For Podcasts That Were About Directors Or Films, There Were A Lot To Choose From So I Found The One That I Thought I Would Enjoy The Most.

The A24 Podcast:

One Of My Influences And Inspirations For Podcasts Is The A24 Podcast, I Listened To Three Episodes In Total And Plan To Listen To More In The Future. Each Of The Episodes Pretty Much Start The Same With A Set Intro Music That Then Leads To The Host Introducing The Podcast And The Topic That The Two Guests Will Talk About. It Also States How The Guests Have Some What Relation To Each Other For Example Both Ari Aster And Robert Eggers Are Horror Directors. The Episodes Are On Average About Fifty Minutes Some Being Longer And Some Being Shorter, The Podcast Is Very To Listen To Whether This Is For Just Entertainment Purposes Or To Listen To While Doing Something Else. The Main Structure Of The Show Is A Talking Podcast Where Two People Will Talk To Each Other About Related Topics, Sometimes Their Dynamics Work Well Where As Other Times Their Dynamics Don’t Work As Well. I Found When Listening To The Podcast There Was A Bit Of Background Noise This Didn’t Really Take Away From The Podcast Too Much But Sometime There Would Be Some Banging And Even A Guitar Riff At One Point. Something That I Noticed Was That I Felt Some Parts Of The Podcast Was Inconsistent Between Episodes. Some Examples Of This Included How Some Episodes Have A Proper Outro With Music And The Same Host From The Beginning Signing Off Where As Some Of The Episodes Just Cut Out While The People Are Talking. Another Example Of This Is In Some Episodes There Is An Intro And Outro From The Guests Of The Show Whereas Other Guests Just Go Straight Into Talking And Don’t Have A Proper Outro. The Things That I Am Going To Take From This Podcast To Inspire My Own Podcast Are Both Things That I Liked And Things That I Disliked. One Of The Good Things That I Liked About This Podcast Was How Easy It Is To Listen To, I Liked This As I Could Find Out Information From The Guests While Still Being Able To Do Something Else In The Background Like Work. This Is Helpful As It Allows The Audience To Still Learn This Information And Listen To Their Favourite Directors Or Actors While Still Being Able To Fit It Into Their Everyday Schedule, I Would Like My Podcast To Feel Like This. Something That I Didn’t Like About This Podcast Was How There Were Inconsistent Parts Throughout The Episodes. When I Go Onto To Create My Own Podcast, I Want The Episodes To Be As Consistent As Possible. For Each Episode I Always Want To Have An Intro And Outro As This Is A Typical Podcast Structure And If I Have Guests On My Show, I Will Want Them To Introduce Themselves After I’ve Said A Bit About Them. This Is Helpful As It Allows The Audience To Have A More Friendly Feel To The Listening Experience And That It Will Feel Like A Conversation That They Are There For.

Another. One Of My Influences And Inspirations For Podcasts Is Boldly Me, I Listened To Three Episodes In Total And Plan To Listen To More In The Future. Each Of Episodes Roughly Start In The Same Way This Is With A Snippet Of The Guest Talking About A Specific Topic. However, This Is Not Always Used If The Episode Has Target Warnings, Then The Snippet Will Be Replaced By Informing The Audience What They Are. There Is Intro Music And Before The Podcast Starts There Is An Acknowledgement For The Gadigal People. After This There Is An Introduction To The Podcast And What It Is About, Following An Introduction About The Guest That Is Going To Appear On The Show. Each Episode Is Around Thirty Minutes Long And Always Starts Off With Asking The Guest What Their Current Hyperfixation Is. The Podcast Is Very Easy To Listen To And Feels More Like A Conversation, It Is Also Really Funny At Times And Made Me Laugh A Lot. When A New Topic Starts There Is Music Played Before, This Is The Same Music From The Intro, Acting Like A Transition. Lastly The Podcast Finishes Pretty Much The Same Each Episode This Is Where The Guest Are Asked Three Questions Which Are Always The Same, The Podcast Is Then Wrapped Up Well And Then Goes Onto The Outro. The Outro Consists Of A Promotion Of The Guest That Was On The Show, A Thank You To The Listeners And Then Finishes With The Same Catch Phrase Each Episode. However, Although This Isn’t Really A Proper Con, I Felt That The Podcast Was Hard To Listen To While Doing Something Else In The Background For Example Work. This Was Because I Was Enjoying It So Much, I Kept Getting Distracted And Just Wanted To Listen To It Rather Than The Thing That I Was Doing. The Things That I Am Going To Take From This Podcast To Inspire My Own Podcast Are Both Things That I Liked And Things That I Disliked. One Of The Things That I Liked About This Podcast And Want To Include In My Own Was The Three Questions That Were Asked To The Guests At The End. I Liked This As I Felt That I Helped Wrap Up The Podcast As It Was A Set Ending Point Rather Than Just Cutting Off Into The Outro Mid Talking. This Is Helpful For The Audience As They Will Able To Feel That The Podcast Is Actually Finished Instead Of When The Talking Is Just Cut Off As This Can Make The Audience Feel The Podcast Is Unfinished Or There Is More To Come. However, One Of The Things That I Disliked About This Podcast Was How I Wasn’t Able To Do Anything Else In The Background. When I Go Onto Create My Own Podcast, I Want The Podcast To Feel Entertaining So That The Audience Could Just Listen To It On Its Own But Not So Distracting So Listeners Can Do Something Else In The Background. This Will Be Helpful As Not Everyone Has Time To Just Listen To A Podcast On Its Own So They Will Often Listen To It While They Are Doing Something Else. This Will Allow Audiences To Listen To My Podcast And Learn New Information While Also Being Able To Fit It Into Their Everyday Schedule.

Directors:

Researching Directors-

Another One Of The First Things That I Did As Part Of The Influences And Inspirations Section Was To Search Up A List Of Directors. Although I Already Know Quite A Few Directors I Wanted To Do This So That I Could View A Wide Range So That I Was Able To Gain Some Inspiration. While This Research Might Not Be Used Now In My Influences And Inspirations Section It Will Be Helpful Later On When I Am Deciding What Directors I Want To Include In My Podcast. While I Was Looking At These Lists Of Directors, I Noticed That There Was Hardly Any Women Directors On Them. This Lead For Me To Search For Lists Of Female Directors So That I Was Able To See A Wider Range Of Directors That Weren’t Just Men. I Wanted To Specifically Do This Because Female Directors Inspire Me The Most And Have Some Great Films, As They Often Left Off Of These Lists, I Wanted To See What Other Female Directors There Were That I Didn’t Already Know About.

Next Steps:

Once I Had Done This, I Had A Better Idea Of What Directors That I Wanted To Look Into For The Influences And Inspirations Section. I Decided That I Wanted To Do One Male Director And One Female Director So I Can Look At Both Rather Than Just One. For The Male Director I Already Had An Idea Of Who I Wanted To Focus On Before Looking At The List Of Different Directors As I Enjoy His Films And Want To Talk More About Him. For The Female Director I Was Inspired By The List As There Was A Lot Of Female Directors That I Wanted To Look At So This Gave Me A Better Idea And She Is Also One Of My Favourite Directors As I Really Enjoy Her Style.

Greta Gerwig:

One Of My Influences And Inspirations For Directors Is Greta Gerwig, Her Main Pieces Of Work Includes Lady Bird, Little Women And Barbie. She Is One Of The Directors That I Really Enjoy Watching And Was The Director That Made Me Want To Learn More About Other Directors And Their Styles. Greta Gerwig Is Also Really Inspirational In The Film Industry As Women Directors Are Often Under Represented In The Film Industry As Women Directors Are Often Under Looked. Barbie Created A Whole New Path For Women Directors As It Proved That Women Were Able To Create Big Blockbusters That Are Successful. Her Style Is Also Something That I Love And I Almost See Her As Like An Auteur As Although That Her Films Are Widely Different, They All Have Similar Aspect To Them Which Makes It Feel Like A Greta Gerwig Film. For Example, All Of The Films That Greta Gerwig Has Created Includes A Main Character That Is Finding Their Place In The World E.g. Lady Bird, Jo March And Barbie Fit This Character Type. This Could Influence And Inspire Me When I Go Onto Creating The Podcast As She Could Be One Of The Directors That I Choose To Talk About During One Of The Episodes Of The Podcast. Not Only Is Greta Gerwig A Director That I Really Like And Would Love To Talk About, But She Is Also An Upcoming Director In The Film Industry. After Her Latest Film Barbie A Lot Of People Have Discovered Her Work, This Would Give The Audience Knowledge About Her Other Films So They Could Know More About Her And Then Dive In Deeper To Her Work.

Ti West:

Another One Of My Influences And Inspirations For Directors Is Ti West, His Main Pieces Of Work Includes The House Of The Devil, The Innkeepers, X And Pearl. Again, He Is One Of The Directors That I Really Enjoy Watching And I Want To Talk More About. Ti West Is A Director That I Feel Creates A New Fresh Wave Of Horror That Isn’t Overused. Each Of His Films Tend To Have A Concept Although They Might Have Typical Genre Conventions, I Feel That They Have A Unique Spin On Them. For Example, In His Film Pearl, He Based It On The Look Of A Disney Film To Show Pearls Mind And Her Dreams. His Style Is Also Something That I Am Inspired By And I Do Feel That He Does Have Some Auteur Aspects To His Work Even Though Each Of His Films Being Vastly Different. For Example, He Likes To Use The Hand-Held POV Shots In All Of His Films And Takes Inspiration From The Looks Of 80s Horror Films. This Could Influence And Inspire Me When I Go Onto Creating The Podcast As He Could Be One Of The Directors That I Choose To Talk About During One Of My Episodes Of The Podcast. Ti West Is A Director That I Really Like And Enjoy His Style, I Think That He Would Be A Good Person To Talk About As His Films Are Really Good And Is Often Not Known About In The Horror Genre. This Would Give The Audience More Knowledge About His Films So If They Like Horror They  Could More Learn About Him And Then Find A New Director That They May Like.

Target Audience:

Primary Target Audience:

The Primary Target Audience That I Have Chosen For The Podcast That I Am Creating For My Final Major Project Is 15 To 25 Year Olds. When Looking At Both Statistics And Research That Has Been Done On The Age Range That Are The Highest Cinema Attendees And Film Watchers, Over The Past Few Years This Was Around The Ages Of 15 To 24. I Feel That This Is The Best Primary Target Audience For My Podcast As The Topic Is Different Directors And Their Style, This Age Range Will Be The Ones Who Enjoy Films The Most And Will Be The Most Knowledgeable About The Latest Films Coming Out. As This Age Range Are The Most Frequent To Watch Films Then This Could Draw Them In More To My Podcast, As They Might Have Heard Of The Director From A Big Release Of Theirs And Want To Know More Or Have Heard Of The Director From The Trailers At The Cinema And Were Interested So They Want To Find Out More About Them. I Also Think That This Is A Good Age Range For My Podcast As I Am Around The Same Age Range, This Might Make My Podcast Feel More Approachable Because They Will Be Hearing About Directors And Films From Someone Who Is In The Same Demographic As Them And Is A Frequent Film Watcher. Although I Will Have A Main Target Audience That I Will Always Stick To Throughout The Whole Podcast, I Feel That Each Of The Episodes May Vary With A More Specific Target Audience Depending What It Focuses On. For Example, If I Am Talking About A Female Director This Will Probably Appeal More To A Female Audience Rather Than A Male Audience As They Are More Likely To Watch Their Films.

Secondary Target Audience:

The Secondary Target Audience That I Have Chosen For The Podcast That I Am Creating For My Final Major Project Is Film Students. When Doing Research For My Primary Target Audience I Found That The Age Range That Watches The Most Films Is 15 – 25 Years Old. This Is Around The Same Age Range Of Film Students Whether This Is Studying Film At GSCE Level Or University Level. I Feel That This Is The Best Secondary Target Audience For My Podcast As Film Students Will Know A Lot About Film. This Can Also Help Inform Them About Different Directors, Whether This Is Out Of Exploring Something New Or For A Specific Project For Their Class. However, I Feel That This Could Also Draw In Film Lovers That Want To Get Into The Film Industry. They Might Not Be Studying Film For A Bunch Of Different Reasons Like For Example There Is Not A Department That Teaches Film. This Will Allow Them To Learn More About Different Directors And Their Style So They Can Learn Some Knowledge To Start With If They Want To Go Onto Do Something In Film.

Action Research:

Planned Action Research:

The Majority Of Action Research That I Am Going To Complete For The Final Major Project Will Be In The Research Stage. This Would Be The Most Beneficial Time To Do This As It Will Give Me Enough Time To Test Things Out, Then I Can Reflect On This To See How Well It Works For My Podcast And What I Can Improve On For Next Time. If I Decide That I Want To Use Something That I Tested Out This Will Give Me Time To Practice It So That I Can Advance My Skills. One Of The Things That I Plan On Doing For Action Research Is Testing Out Different Effects That I Can Use On The Audio That I Have Recorded. I Am Thinking About Mainly Focusing On Taking Out Background Noises And How To Level Out The Audio So That It Is Clear, Then I Will Practice This So That I Can Make Sure That I Have A Good Understanding On How To Use This Effect. Another One Of The Things That I Plan On Doing For Action Research Is Testing Out Different Microphones In More Depth And Learning How To Properly Use Them. The College Has Recently Got A Podcast Kit Which Has A Microphone That Is Usually Used in Podcasts So I Would Like To Test This Out. I Am Going To Test The Microphone That I Usually Use For Recording Against This So That I Am Able To See Which One I Prefer And Want To Use For The Actual Podcast. Lastly Another One Of The Things That I Plan On Doing For Action Research Is To Analyse Some Existing Podcast, I Will Look At Both Traditional Audio Podcast And Video Podcasts. I Know That This Might Not Be Seen As Action Research But I Find That This Helps Me A Lot As It Allows Me To See What Different Podcasts Do And How This Works For Them As Well As See What I Like And What I Dislike So That I Can Gain Some Inspiration On How I Want My Own Podcast To Be.

How I Will Push My Skills:

The Aspects That I Have Chosen To Do For The Action Research, Both In The Research Stage And The Pre-Production Stage, I Feel Will Push My Skills. During This Stage Of The Final Major Project, I Will Be Learning Skills That I Haven’t Learnt Before Or Need To Improve On And Then Will Practice Them So That I Can Use Them For The Production Of My Podcast. A Big Example Of This Is Editing Effects, For Last Year’s Final Major Project I Also Created A Podcast And Tried To Use An Effect That Removed Background Noises From The Audio. This Didn’t End Up Going Very Well  And I Wasn’t Able To Use It In The Final Podcast As I Got Really Confused And I Couldn’t Get It To Work. This Time I Am Going To Push Myself More By Practicing The Different Editing Effects, That I Have Learnt, A Few Times Before I Go Onto The Production Stage. This Will Allow Me To Have A Clear Understanding On How To Use This Effect When I Go Onto The Creation Of My Podcast As I Then Won’t Get As Confused Because I Will Know Exactly What To Do. Something Else That I Am Going To Do Is A Run-Through Of The Draft Script For Each Episode Of The Podcast In The Pre-Production Stage. This Will Allow Me To Have A Mock Version Of My Podcast So That I Am Able To See What It Will Be Like And What Change I Need To Make For The Final Script. For Last Year’s Podcast, I Didn’t Do This And I Wrote The Final Script Without Doing An Initial Run Through Of The Draft Script Then I Went Straight Onto The Production Stage. I Found A Lot Of Problems Because Of This As I Was Needing To Constantly Edit The Script During The Production Stage As It Was Too Long Or Didn’t Make Sense. In The End It Ended Up Still Being A Lot Longer Than The Target Time That I Had Decided For Each Episode. To Push Myself This Time I Am Going To Do A Run-Through Of Each Episode Before Going Onto The Production Stage Which Will Then Give Me An Idea On What I Need To Cut And What I Need To Keep So That I Can Make It Fit In My Chosen Time Limit Without Losing Important Content.

Practical Action Research:

For The Action Research Part Of The Proposal, I Decided To Test Different Microphones So I Could See What Was The Best Option For Me To Use In My Podcast. I Wanted To Test Three Different Microphones So That I Could Have A Wider Range To Choose From But When I Went To Pick Up The Equipment One Of The Microphones Wasn’t Available. As I Had Already Used This Microphone Many Times Before So I Decided That I Was Just Going To Test The Two Microphones That Were Available.

Podcast Kit-

The First Microphone That I Tested Out Was The Podcast Kit, At The Start This Was Actually A Struggle To Use. This Was The First Time That I Had Tested This Microphone So I Wasn’t Completely Sure How To Set This Up And Found It Really Complicated. After I Had Finally Worked Out How To Assemble The Microphone Which Was Actually Pretty Simple When I Had Figured It Out. Something Else About This Microphone Is That It Plugs Into My Laptop So That I Am Able To Record Straight On Adobe Audition. I Decided To Record A Short Intro For The Podcast So That I Was Able To Test Out How The Microphone Sounded And Whether It Would Work Well For My Podcast.

Zoom Mic-

The Other Microphone That I Tested Out Was The Zoom Mic, This Was Actually Pretty Easy To Set Up And Came With A Tri-Pod To Hold The Microphone. I Haven’t Really Used This Microphone Before Maybe Once Or Twice Briefly For Previous Projects But Then I Never Really Got To Test Out How It Worked. When I Had Everything Set Up, I Decided To Record A Short Intro For The Podcast So That I Was Able Test Out How The Microphone Sounded And Whether It Would Work Well For My Podcast. I Found That This Microphone Tended To Pick Up The Background Noise Very Easily So There Was A Lot Of Noise That Couldn’t Be Avoided Over The Talking.

Reflection-

After Testing Out Both Of The Microphones I Have Decided To Choose The Podcast Kit For The Microphone That I Am Going To Use For My Podcast. One Of The Reasons That I Have Decided To Choose This Microphone Is How Easy It Was To Use. Once I Had Gotten Past The Initial Struggle, I Found That This Was So Easy To Set Up, The Microphone Also Plugged Straight Into My Laptop Which Makes Things A Lot More Efficient. This Will Be Helpful When Going Onto Production As It Will Make The Process A Lot Simpler, As I Am Able To Record Straight Onto My Laptop, I Won’t Have To Transfer Any Audio From The SD Card So I Can Get To Editing Straight After. The Other Reason That I Have Decided To Choose This Microphone Is The Sound Quality Is Really Good And Is Probably The Best Out Of All The Microphones That I Have Used Before. The Microphone Also Doesn’t Pick Up As Much Background Noises As The Other Microphones That I Have Used Before.

Primary/Secondary Data And Theory:

Intended Research:

Some Of The Aspects That I Intend On Researching For The Podcast I Am Creating For The Final Major Project Include Directors, Podcast Editing Effects And How To Engage My Target Audience. I Haven’t Completely Decided On All The Directors That I Want To Focus On Yet But I Do Know Two That I Would Like To Focus On These Are Ti West And Emerald Fennell. Both Of These Directors Are Going To Have A Similar Research Process I Am Going To Start By Looking At Biography, Style And Any Past Work That They Have Done. Then I Will Move Onto Watching Some Of Their Films So That I Am Able To Analyse Their Style And See How This Is Featured Throughout Their Films. For Ti West I Am Going To Focus On His More Popular Films As When He Was Starting Out, He Created A Lot Of Student And Low Budget Films But I Am Not Sure That I Will Be Able To Find These. The Films That I Am Going To Look At Are The House Of The Devil, The Innkeepers, X And Pearl. For Emerald Fennell She Only Has Two Films Out At The Moment So I Am Going To Look At Them Both These Are Promising Young Women And Saltburn. Something Else That I Intend To Look Into Is Some More Directors So That I Can Decide On All The Directors That I Want To Focus On Each Episode. I Am Also Not Completely Sure If I Should Pair Directors Up That Have Similar Topics To Each Other For Example I Would Like To Look Into Greta Gerwig And Jordan Peele. These Would Both Pair Up Well With The Directors That I Have Already Chosen As I Could Have An Episode On Women Directors And An Episode On Horror Directors. The Only Problem With This Is That I Would Only Have Two Pair Which Would Only Be Two Episodes So I Would Have To Find Another Pair So I Need To Research More Into This. Another Thing That I Intend On Researching Is Editing Effects For My Podcast. I Would Like To Learn More About Aspects Like How To Level Out So Everything Is Clear And The Audio Isn’t Too Loud Or Too Quiet. I Would Also Like To Do More Research Into How To Remove Background Noises, I Think This Will Be Helpful For Making My Podcast The Best That It Can Be. Something Else I Would Like To Look Into Creating A Theme Tune For My Podcast Whether This Is Creating It Myself Or Finding Some Music That I Think Will Work Well For The Podcast. Lastly, I Intend To Do Some Research Into The Primary And Secondary Target Audience That I Have Chosen So That I Am Able To Understand Them. I Will Be Able To Learn What Their Likes And Dislikes Are As Well As What Interest Them The Most. With This Research I Will Then Have The Insight For My Own Podcast So I Will Know What Would Draw My Target Audience In And Keep Them Engaged And What Would Make Them Bored Or Uninterested.

Secondary Research Resources That I Am Planning On Using:

Podcasts-

I Am Going To Use Listening To Podcasts As A Form Of Secondary Research So That I Am Able To Look At The Different Types And Formats Of Podcasts. This Will Allow Me To See What Works And What Doesn’t Work For A Specific Podcast And Will Then Inspire Me To See What I Liked And Disliked About Each Of Them So That I Can Take This Into Account When Creating My Own Podcast. I Feel That This Will Be An Effective Form Of Secondary Research As I Will Be Able To Learn More About The Different Types Of Podcasts There Are While Also Gaining Insight On What I Want My Podcast To Be Like.

Video Podcasts-

I Am Going To Use Watching Video Podcasts As A Form Of Secondary Research So That I Am Able To Learn How To Create Them And See The Different Types Of Formats That They Come In. I Want To Record An Episode Of My Own Podcast So That I Can Show The Process During The Recording And The Creation Of My Podcast. This Will Give Me An Insight On Video Podcasts As I Have Never Really Watched Any Before And I Am Not Sure How They Are Created. I Feel That This Will Be An Effective Form Of Secondary Research As I Will Be Able To See What Works And What Doesn’t Work For Video Podcasts, So That I Am Able To Gain Inspiration Of What I Like And What I Don’t Like To Include In My Own Podcast.

Films-

I Am Going To Use Watching Films As A Form Of Secondary Research So That I Am Able To Have A Better Understanding On The Directors That I Am Focusing On. This Will Allow Me To Have A Better Feeling Of Their Style As I Will Be Able To See Their Films Myself Instead Of Just Reading About It Or Watching Clips From Their Films. I Feel That This Will Be An Effective Form Of Secondary Research As I Will Be Able To See A Few Of Their Films And Then Compare Them To Each Other To See How The Directors Style Is Shown In Each Of Them.

Websites And Articles:

I Am Going To Use Websites And Articles As A Form Of Secondary Research So That I Am Able To Find Out More Information About Different Directors, Aspects Of Creating A Successful Podcast And Anything Else That I Need To. This Will Allow Me To Find Out Information That I Wouldn’t Have Been Able To Find Out In Pieces Of Media For Example Podcasts Or Films. It Also Allows Me To See The Opinions Of Other People Whether It Is On The Directors I Am Focusing On And Their Films Or The Podcasts That I Have Listened To From Reviews And Interviews. I Feel That Some Websites And Articles Will Be An Effective Form Of Secondary As Some Might Be Some Really Helpful Information That Will Help Me With My Podcast But Some Might Not Be As Reliable Information.

Screenshot 2024-02-07 at 12.09.50.png

YouTube Videos-

I Am Going To Use Watching YouTube Videos As A Form Of Secondary Research So That I Am Able To Learn Practical Skills Like Audio Effects And Find Out More Information About Some Of The Topics That I Am Researching. This Will Allow Me To Practice And Learn New Skills Like The Removal Of The Background Sounds And How To Level Out The Audio Which Will Make My Podcast The Best That It Can Be. This Will Help Me Learn How To Create This Effect And I Will Be Able To Visually See Each Step Of The Effect Then Be Able To Do This In My Own Software. This Will Also Help With Having A Wider Range Of Information From Another Source For The Research. I Feel That This Will Be An Effective Form Of Secondary Research And Action Research As I Am Able To Learn Some More Skills At My Own Pace As I Can Do Each Step Along With The Video And Create Something To Make My Podcast Better.

Primary Research Resources That I Am Planning On Using:

Questionnaires-

I Am Going To Use Questionnaires As A Form Of Primary Research So That I Am Able To Find Out More About My Audience And Their Interests. This Will Allow Me To Have More Information About Their Likes And Dislikes So That I Can Cater My Podcast To This. I Am Thinking About Doing A Few Different Questionnaires For Example One About Their Interest And Knowledge In Different Directors, One About Their Podcast Listening Habits And What They Like Or Don’t Like About Them And One That Focuses On My Own Podcast And What They Would Be Interested In Or If They Think That It Works Well. I Feel That This Could Be An Effective Form Of Primary Research, If I Can Get The Right People To Fill Out My Questionnaire Then I Think That It Could Be Effective Research. However, I Don’t Really Know That Many People That Fit In My Target Audience That I Have Chosen To Actually Fill Out The Questionnaire So They Might Be A Lot Older Than This.

Questionnaire--1200x720.png

Action Research-

I Am Going To Use Action Research As A Form Of Primary Research So That I Am Able To Test Out And Practice Some Of The Skills That I Want To Learn. This Will Allow Me To Gain More Knowledge About Different Skills That I Want To Work On For Example Practice Run Throughs Of My Podcast So That I Am Able To Get Used To How The Microphone Works And See How Well The Script Works. This Will Also Allow Me To Learn Different Editing Effects For Example Learning To Remove Background Noise So That It Doesn’t Distract From The Actual Podcast And How To Level Out The Audio So That My Voice Is Clear And Not Too Loud Or Too Quiet. I Feel That This Would Be An Effective Piece Of Primary Research As I Am Able To Practice And Learn The Things That I Want To Include In My Podcast, So That I Will Be More Advanced And Know Exactly What I Am Doing When It Comes To My Actual Podcast.

Representation Issues:

Throughout My Podcast I Am Going To Focus On Some Political Aspects That Surround The Directors That I Have Chosen. One Of The Examples Of How I Am Going To Do This Is To Look Into How The Horror Genre Which Is Often Overlooked In The Film Industry. Horror Is One Of The Biggest Overlooked Genres Often Missing Out On Critical Acclaim And Are Usually Left Out During Awards Season. I Don’t Know If This Is Due To The Stereotype That The Horror Genre Often Holds But It Can Be So Much More Than Cheap Scares. There Are So Many Films That I Can Think Of That Fit In The Horror Genre That Are Just As Deserving As Over Films, A Lot Of These Are Beautifully Shot And Keep The Audience Thinking About Them For Days. Another One Of The Examples Of How I Am Going To Do This Is To Look Into The Difference Between Male And Female Directors. Again, Female Directors Are Often Overlooked And Have Less Opportunities Than The Male Directors. Even After More Female Directors Are Being Recognized The Industry Is Still Dominated By Male Directors, So I Would Like To Have A Large Focus On Female Directors And Their Work As Part Of My Podcast.

Project Work Flow:

The Project Workflow That I Have Decided For My Final Major Project Is Going To Be Broken Down Into Different Sections Depending On What Part Of The Project I Am On. The First Stage Of The Project Workflow Will Be The Proposal Stage, This Is Where I Will Look At Different Ideas And Solidify The Idea That I Have Chosen. This Will Include Looking At Different Influences And Inspirations That Could Be Used To Inspire My Podcast And The Target Audience That I Am Going To Focus On. Something Else That I Will Think About Is What Roles I Am Going To Be Taking On As Part Of This Project And What Will Be The Main One That I Will Focus On. I Will Also Spend Some Time Planning Ahead For The Next Stage By Looking At What Kind Of Research I Want To Look Into When I Get Onto This Stage. After This I Will Move Onto The Research Stage, This Is Where I Will Research Different Aspects That Will Benefit My Podcast. I Am Going To Look Into The Skills That I Will Need To Make My Podcast Successful Like For Example Different Editing Effects So That There Is No Background Noises Or So The Audio Is Clear. Something Else I Will Research Is My Chosen Target Audience So That I Can Learn What Will Work The Best To Draw Them To My Podcast. I Am Also Going To Do Some Research For The Content Of The Podcast Here I Will Look Into Different Directors And Their Styles As Well As Any Political Aspects That Surround Them. Then I Will Move Onto The Pre-Production Stage, This Is Where I Will Plan And Prepare How I Want The Production Stage To Go. To Do This I Will Create Different Documents Like A Script And An Asset Plan So That I Am Able To Create A Layout For My Podcast And Visualize How I Want It To Look. Something Else That I Would Like To Do In This Stage Is To Do A Run Through Of My Podcast With The Script That I Have Created This Will Allow Me To See How The Podcast Flows And See If There Is Any Changes That I Need To Do Before I Move Onto The Production Stage. I Would Also Like To Create A Schedule For The Production Stage So That When I Move Onto Production, I Will Know What I Need To Do And When. After This I Will Move Onto The Production Stage, This Is Where I Will Create The Actual Podcast. I Am Going To Start With The Recording And I Am Going To Leave Some Spare Time Where I Can Re-Record Anything That Needs To Be Done. Then Once I Have Done All Of The Recording I Will Then Move Onto Editing Where I Will Put The Audio Clips Together And Add Anything Else That I Need To Like Theme Music Or Audio Effects. Then I Will Complete Anything Else That I Need To Do For The Production Of My Podcast For Example Editing The Footage From Filming The Recording Process For One Of My Episodes. Lastly Then I Will Move Onto The Evaluation, This Is Where I Will Evaluate On The Entire Process Of My Project And Do A Presentation On This. I Will Look Back At My Final Major Project And Reflect On What I Thought I Did Well, What Didn’t Go Quite As Well, How I Managed To Solve Any Issues And What I Need To Improve On. I Am Also Going To Create And Present A Presentation To My Supervisor That Will Show Them The Entire Process Of My Final Major Project. After I Have Completed Both Of These Tasks This Will Be The End Of My FMP And It Will Then Go Off To Be Graded By An External Examiner. Something That I Want To Do At Each Stage Of The Process Is To Have One Of My Teachers Look Over My Work And See If There Is Anything That I Need To Improve On Or Change This Will Help Me Make My Final Major Project As Good As It Can Be.

Final Plan:

For The Final Major Project I Have Decided That I Am Going To Create A Podcast About Different Directors And Their Style. This Will Have Different Episodes And In Each Of The Episodes I Will Focus On New Directors Looking At Their Work And Any Political Aspects That Surround Them. There Are Two Directors That I Definitely Want To Focus On These Are Emerald Fennell And Ti West. With The Other Directors That I Am Going To Focus On, I Am Going To Finalize This In The Research Stage After Doing Some More Research On Other Directors. Some Of The People That I Would Like To Do More Research On Is Jordan Peele And Greta Gerwig. I Have An Idea On How I Want The Podcast Layout To Be Like I Am Thinking About Having Paired Directors That Relate To Each Other For Each Episode. With The Directors That I Have Already Chosen And The Directors I Definitely Want To Look Into, I Have Two Pairs. For Example, I Could Do An Episode On Horror Directors, Ti West And Jordan Peele, And An Episode On Female Directors, Emerald Fennell And Greta Gerwig. I Feel That This Would Also Work A Lot Better With The Political Aspects As I Will Be Able To Focus On Them In One Episode Instead Of Talking About More Than Once In Different Episodes. The Only Problem That I Have With This Idea Is That I Would Have To Find Another Pair Of Directors As I Feel That Two Episodes Is Not Enough. Something Else That I Would Like To Include At The End Of My Podcast Is Interviews That Relate To The Topic That I Am Talking About In The Episode. This Would Give Insight Into What The Listeners Think About The Directors And Some Of The Issues That Are Surrounding Them. I Would Like My Podcast To Be Quite Conventional And Will Have A Set Structure With A Proper Intro And Outro, I Will Also Transition Music For Each New Topic This Will Either Be Something Related To The Topic I Am Talking About Or Will Be The Same As The Theme Music That I Have Chosen. Another Thing That I Would Like To Do As Part Of My Podcast Is To Film One Of My Episodes, This Will Allow Me To Show The Recording Process And The Set Up That I Use To Create My Podcast. I Think That This Will Be A Beneficial Part Of My Project As It Gives Insight Into The Creation Process Showing People What I Do As Part Of The Production Process. There Are Two Parts To The Target Audience That I Have Chosen These Are The Primary Target Audience And The Secondary Target Audience. For The Primary Target Audience, I Decided That I Was Going To Focus On The Age Range Of 15 – 25 Year Olds. This Is The Age Range That Watches The Most Films So I Feel That They Will Be More Interested Than Other Age Ranges And Will Want To Learn More About Different Directors. I Am Also In This Demographic And Love Talking About Films So It Might Be More Intriguing To Hear From Someone Around The Same Age. They Then Be More Likely To Want To Learn More About Other Directors And Take Up The Recommendations I Have Given. For The Secondary Target Audience, I Decided That I Was Going To Focus On Film Students. These Students Are Around The Same Age As My Primary Target Audience, 15 – 25 Year Olds, Ranging From GSCE Level To University Level. These Students Can Be More Informed About Different Directors That They Might Have Only Heard About Which Can Help With Film Projects Or Even Personal Interest. This Could Also Appeal To Students That Want To Study Film In The Future But There Currently Isn’t A Department For This At Their Current Level Of Study. They Will Be Able To Learn More About Different Directors Even Though They Might Not Be Able To Study The Subject. Throughout The Episodes Of My Podcast, I Will Be Looking At Representation And Political Aspects Which Follow The Directors That I Am Focusing On. One Of The Main Things That I Am Going To Be Focused On Is Female Directors, I Am Going To Have A Whole Episode Dedicated To This. During This Episode I Will Not Only Look At Their Work And Their Style But I Will Also Look At The Representational Aspects Of Female Directors In The Film Industry. Female Directors Are Still Overlooked And Are Often Offered Less Opportunities Than Male Directors. Female Directors Are Also Snubbed At Award Shows, For Example At The Oscars There Is Only One Female Director Nominated This Year. Something Else While Not Really A Representational Issue It Is Still Widely Agreed On By Fans Of The Genre That Horror Films Are Often Overlooked. The Horror Genre Often Misses Out On Critical Acclaim And Positive Reviews From Film Critics, There Are So Many Films That Are So Well Done But Are Missed Due To The Stereotype That Horror Holds. The Final Major Project That I Did Last Year Was A Podcast This Was About The History Of Horror Films. Although That I Have Decided To Do A Podcast Again For This Year’s FMP, I Feel That It Will Be Completely Different From My Previous Podcast. There Are A Lot Of Things That I Want To Change And Improve On This Time, For Example I Would Like To Learn More About Editing Effects And Practice These More. Last Time I Tried To Remove The Background Noise In My Audio But This Really Failed And I Wasn’t Happy With This As I Was Not Able To Use The Effect. I Want To Work More On This So That I Can Improve And Be Able To Create The Effect This Time. Something Else That I Am Going To Do Is Focus On Some New Aspects That I Didn’t Really Focus On During The First Final Major Project. Firstly, I Am Going To Do A Completely New Topic Which Still Relates To Film But Focuses On Something Different To What I Did Last Year. I Am Also Going To Add Interviews To Each Of My Episodes Which I Didn’t Do Last Time As The Episodes Where Too Long. I Feel That This Will Add To The Episode As It Will Give Listeners Insight Into Their Opinion On The Topic That I Am Talking About. This Time I Will Also Make Sure That I Am Leaving Time For A Run Through Before I Go Onto Record For The Final Podcast. Last Time I Was Quite Tight With Time And Went Straight Onto Recording So My Podcast Ending Up Being Much Longer Than I Planned It To Be. If I Leave Time To Have A Run Through, I Can Make Any Changes That I Need To And Will Then Know What To Cut Down Or Add.

Moodboard:

Podcast Moodboard.png

Role:

There Are A Few Different Roles That I Am Going To Be Taking On For The Final Major Project, As I Am Working On My Own, I Will Have To Cover Most Of The Roles. Some Of The Roles That Are Involved In Creating A Podcast That I Will Be Taking On Include The Host, The Writer, The Producer, The Editor And The Audio Engineer. However, Although I Am Going To Take On Most Of The Roles, I Am Going To Focus On A Main Role That I Want To Learn More About And Practice. I Have Chosen To Focus On The Role Of The Producer, Their Main Focus Is Controlling The Production Process Making Sure That Everything Is Organized And On Track. This Will Allow Me To Focus On Planning Out Every Step Of The Creation Process So That I Can Make Sure That Everything Is Running Smoothly. I Am Also Able To Oversee Everything That I Have Done For My Podcast And See If Anything Is Running Well Or If Its Not Find Ways To Fix It. This Will Be The Role That Is Best For Me To Focus On As I Really Like Planning Things Out And I Think Being Able To Oversee While Being In Control Of The Process Will Suit Me The Best.

Groups:

For The Final Major Project I Have Decided That I Am Going To Work On My Own, There Are A Few Reasons Why I Have Decided Not To Work In A Group And Feel That This Is The Best Way To Work On My FMP. One Of The Reasons That I Have Decided To Work Solo For My FMP Is So That I Can Have Full Creative Control Over The Project. I Have A Clear Idea Of What I Want To Create And How I Want To Do This So If I Worked In A Group This Will Be A Lot Harder As There Will Be Other People With Other Ideas. Another One Of The Reasons That I Have Decided To Work Solo For My FMP Is So That I Can Stick To My Own Schedule. This Allows Me To Set My Own Time Frames And My Own Schedule, If I Work In A Group, I Will Be Relying On Other People To Complete The Project As Everyone Will Have Different Roles And Different Schedules.
