Directors Research:
A Big Part Of The Research That I Am Doing For My Podcast Is Looking At Different Directors As This Is The Main Topic Of Focus. As Each Episode Will Focus On Two Different Directors, I Will Need To Know Enough Information About Each Of Them And Have An Idea About Their Films. I Have Decided To Look Into Six Directors In Total And There Is Going To Be Three Episodes Each Episode Focusing On Two Directors. The Episode Will Be Themed, I Am Going To Have An Episode On Female Directors Which Will Focus On Emerald Fennell And Sofia Coppola, An Episode On Horror Directors Which Will Focus On Ti West And Jordan Peele And An Episode On Neurodivergent Directors Which Will Focus On Greta Gerwig And Tim Burton. Doing This Research Will Allow Me To Have A Good Idea About Each Of The Directors And Will Help Me When I Go Onto Creating My Podcast As I Will Be Knowledgeable About This And Will Have Reliable Information For The Audience To Learn From.

After Having A Look At The Feel Of The Director, I Then Went Onto Doing Some More Research On Emerald Fennell’s Films Focusing On Two Things. The First Thing That I Focused On Was Why She Chooses Certain Aspects In Her Films. I Wanted To Research This As I Have Seen Both Of Her Films And It Would Give Me A Better Idea Of Her Style If I Knew Why She Included Something The Way She Did. The Second Thing That I Focused On Was Other People’s Opinions On Her Films. Again, I Have Watched Both Of Her Films And Have Formed My Own Opinions But I Wanted To See What Everyone Else Thought As Everyone Has Different Opinions. This Means That Someone Could Have Thought About The Films Differently To I Did Which Will Give Me A Wider Range Of Knowledge When It Comes To My Podcast Instead Of Just Sticking To My Own Thoughts And Opinions. This Will Help Me Overall As When It Comes To My Podcast I Will Not Only Be Able To Have Insight From The Director On Why She Did Certain Things But I Will Also Have A Wide Range Of Opinions From Different People.

Watching Her Films:
A Part Of The Research That I Did For The Director Emerald Fennell Was Wtaching The Two Films That She Had Created These Were Promising Young Woman And Saltburn.
Watching Emerald Fennell’s Films Will Help Me When I Go Onto The Production Of My Podcast As It Will Help Me Be A Lot More Informed On This Director. As I Was Able To Watch Her Films For Myself, I Could Form My Own Opinions And Visually See What Her Style Consisted Of, Seeing What Similarities Her Films Had And What Differences Her Films Had. I Feel That Doing This Will Allow Me To Have A Deeper Understanding Of Her Work Which Will Help Engage The Audience In More As I Will Know Exactly What I Am Talking About And Will Have More Reliable Knowledge As I Have Seen Her Films.
The First Of Her Films That I Watched Was Her Feature Film, Promising Young Woman Which Came Out In 2020. “A Young Woman Traumatized By A Tragic Event In Her Past, Seeks Out Vengeance Against Those Who Crossed Her Path” (IMDB, 2020). This Was My First Time Watching This Film And Although That It Was Quite Hard To Watch I Really Enjoyed It. When I Went Into The Film, I Only Had A Vague Idea Of The Plot So I Didn’t Really Know Much About What Was Going To Happen. I Personally Feel That This Is The Best Way To Watch The Film As It Makes The Film More Of A Surprise And You Are Able To Form Your Own Opinions.
The Second Of Her Films That I Watched Was Her Latest Film, Saltburn Which Came Out In 2023. “A Student At Oxford University Finds Himself Drawn Into The World Of A Charming And Aristocratic Classmate, Who Invites Him To His Eccentric Family’s Sprawling Estate For A Summer Never To Be Forgotten” (IMDB, 2023). This Was A Rewatch Of This Film As I Had Already Seen It Before When It Came Out Last Year On Prime Video. I Found Myself Noticing Things That Foreshadowed The Plot Which I Wouldn’t Have Known Or Realised When Watching It Through The First Time. I Still Really Enjoy This Film Even With Knowing The Plot And The Twist But I Would Recommend If It Were A First Time Watch Go In Knowing As Little Information As Possible. I Do Feel That It Is Quite Different To Promising Young But It Has Also Got A Lot Of Similarities.

Further Research - Thoughts And Opinions:
After Having A Look At The Feel Of The Director, I Then Went Onto Doing Some More Research On Sofia Coppola’s Films Focusing On Two Things. One Of The Things That I Focused On Was Why She Decided To Do Something In A Certain Way. I Have Seen Some Of Her Films And Feel That This Research Will Give Me A More In Depth Understanding On Her As I Will Be Able To See Why Specific Aspects Were Chosen To Be Included In The Film. Another One Of The Things That I Focused On Was Other People’s Opinions On Her Films. Again, I Have Watched Some Of Her Films And Have My Own Thoughts On Them But I Wanted To See What Other Peoples Opinion Were As Everyone Has Different Thoughts And Opinions. This Means That Someone Could Have Thought About The Film Completely Different To What I Thought About. Overall, This Will Give Me A Wider Range Of Knowledge For My Podcast Instead Of Just Focusing On My Own Thoughts. This Will Help Me When I Go Onto Create My Podcast As Not Only Will I Have A Deeper Understanding On Why The Director Did Something In A Certain Way But I Will Also Have A Wide Range Of Opinions Of What Other People Thought About The Film.

Watching Her Films:
A Part Of The Research That I Did For The Director Sofia Coppola Was Watching Some Of Her Films. She Has Released Quite A Lot Of Films So I Decided That I Was Going To Pick Three To Focus On These Were Marie Antoinette, The Beguiled And Lost In Translation.
Watching Sofia Coppola’s Films Will Help Me When I Go Onto The Creation Of My Podcast, As It Will Allow Me To Be A Lot More Knowledgeable About The Director. As I Was Able To Watch Some Of Her Films Myself, I Was Able To Come Up With My Own Thoughts And Opinions On Each Of Them. This Will Also Allow Me To See What Her Usual Style Consists Of And How It Is Carried Over To Her Other Films Or How It Might Change. I Feel That Doing This Will Help Me Have A More In Depth Understanding Of Her Work And Be More Informed About This So When I Go Onto My Podcast, I Have Seen Her Films So I Will Have More Of A Reliable Knowledge Which Will Then Engage The Audience More As They Know I Have Accurate Information.
The First Of The Films That I Watched Was Her Third Film, Marie Antoinette Which Came Out In 2006. “The Revelling Of France’s Iconic But Ill-Fated Queen, Marie Antoinette. From Her Betrothal And Marriage To Louis XVI At 14 To Her Reign As Queen At 19 And To The End Of Her Reign As Queen, And The Ultimately The Fall Of Versailles” (IMDB, 2006). This Was My First Time Watching This Film And My First Time Watching A Film That Was Directed By Sofia Coppola, Even Though I Have Been Wanting To For A While. I Actually Really Enjoyed This Film Despite Some Of The Lower Reviews And Thought That It Was Really Fun To Watch. I Also Liked How It Focused On Marie Antoinette As A Person And Her Journey Instead Of Just Focusing On Historical Aspects, This Made Me Feel More Connected To The Characters.
The Second Of The Films That I Watched Was One Of Her More Recent Films, The Beguiled Which Came Out In 2017. “The Unexpected Arrival Of A Wounded Union Soldier At A Girls School In Virginia During The American Civil War Leads To Jealousy And Betrayal” (IMDB, 2017). Again, This Was The First Time That I Had Watched This Film And I Had No Previous Knowledge On It, I Went In Not Really Sure What It Was About. This Meant That I Didn’t Even Realize That This Was A Remake Until Doing Some Research On The Film Afterwards. This Was Probably One Of My Favourite Films Out Of The Sofia Coppola Films That I Had Watched And I Really Enjoyed The Story. It Was Quite A Short Film But I Felt That Everything Wrapped Up Where It Needed To And Would Probably Recommend Going In With No Previous Knowledge For The Best Experience.
The Last Of The Films That I Watched Was Her Second Film, Lost In Translation Which Came Out In 2003. “A Faded Movie Star And A Neglected Young Woman Form An Unlikely Bond After Crossing Paths In Tokyo” (IMDB, 2003). This Was Also My First Time Watching This Film And I Had Heard Mainly Good Things About The Film Knowing That It Got A Lot Of Critical Acclaim When It Came Out. However, I Didn’t Like It As Much As I Thought That I Would Have, I Do Feel That It Was A Beautiful Film And Understood The Message That It Was Trying To Portray But I Just Felt Myself Not Being Able To Get Into It. I Don’t Whether That It Was Personally Not The Right Time To Watch The Film Or If It Just Wasn’t For Me. I Do Feel That I Would Probably Watch It Again To Give It Another Chance But It Was Very Different To Both Marie Antoinette And The Beguiled Which I Really Enjoyed.

Representational Research- Female Directors:
First Female Director-

The First Ever Female Director Was Alice Guy-Blaché, She Was Also The First Person To Create A Narrative Film.
She Was Originally A Secretary For Léon Gaumont Who Was A French Inventor And Engineer, One Day She Asked Him If She Could Try And Film A Fictional Scene, He Thought It Was A Silly Idea But He Let Her Do It As Long As It Didn’t Interfere With Her Work.
That Was When The First Narrative Film Was Created, The Cabbage Fairy In 1896. It Was A Basic Story About A Couple That Wanted To Have A Baby And It Turned Out To Be A Great Success.
Due To This Film, She Was Appointed As Head Of Production For Leon Gaumont’s Filmmaking Business, From Then She Was Involved With Making Hundreds Of Films Being Both A Writer And A Director.
She Worked On A Lot Of Different Aspects Throughout The Years Including Every Stage Of The Filmmaking Process Like For Example Location Scouting, Finding Props For The Films, Hiring And Training The New Directors, Making Some Of The Costumes And Directing The Set Designers.
For The Work That She Had Done She Won Her First Award In 1900 And Was Known As One Of The First Directors To Experiment With Different Film Techniques In 1905 Having Directed More Than 100 Films On The Chronophone Which Joined Picture And Sound Together.
She Then Took On Her Biggest Project In 1906, This Was A 25 Part Film And Was A Big Challenge But She Succeeded And It Was Projected At ‘The Society For The Development Of The National Industry’
In Later Years She Also Became The First Woman To Be Running Her Own Studio This Was The Solax Company.
She Had A Lot Of First With Her Film Company Focusing On Challenging Social Norms, This Ranged From Looking At Things Ranging From Gender Equality To Antisemitism And She Was The First To Have An All-African American Cast For A Film.
Although She Was A Big Part Of The Film Movement, She Became Forgotten And Was Not Mentioned For The Work That She Had Done For Example Her Company Was Featured In A Documentary But The Only Person Named Was Her Husband.

Further Research- Thoughts And Opinions:
After Having A Look At The Feel Of The Director, I Then Went Onto Doing Some More Research On Ti West’s Films Focusing On Two Things. The First Thing That I Focused On Was Why He Chose To Use Specific Aspects In His Films. I Have Seen Some Of His Films Myself And Doing This Research Would Give Me A Better Understanding Of His Style As I Will Be Able To See Why He Chose To Use Certain Aspects In His Films. The Second Thing That I Focused On Was What Other People Thought About His Films. Again, I Have Watched Some Of His Films And Have My Own Opinions On Them But I Wanted To See What Other People Thought As Everyone Has Different Opinions. This Means That Different People Have Different Opinions So Someone Might Have A Completely Different View On His Films Than I Do. Overall, This Will Give Me A Wider Range Of Knowledge For My Podcast Instead Of Just Giving My Own Opinions On His Films. This Will Help Me When I Go Onto Create My Podcast As Not Only Will I Have Insight On Why The Director Did Something A Certain Way But I Will Also Have A Wide Range Of Opinions.

Watching His Films:
A Part Of The Research That I Did For The Director Ti West Was Watching Some Of His Films That He Had Created These Were X And Pearl.
Watching Some Of Ti West’s Films Will Help Me When I Go Onto Creating My Podcast, As It Will Allow Me To Be More Knowledgeable About The Director. As I Have Watched Some Of His Films Myself, I Am Able To Come Up With My Own Opinion About Them Rather Than Just Using Other People’s Opinions. This Has Allowed Me To Have A Better Idea Of What His Style Consists Of And How It Shows Up In His Films Or How It Might Change. I Feel That Doing This Will Give Me A More In Depth Understanding About Who He Is As A Director And His Work For When I Go Onto Create My Podcast. This Will Also Allow Me To Be More Informed On This As I Have Seen Some Of His Films Myself So I Will Have Both Personal And Reliable Knowledge To Give To My Audience To Keep Them Engaged And Learn Something New.
The First Of His Films That I Had Watched Was His Most Recent Film Pearl Which Came Out In 2022. “In 1918 A Young Woman On The Brink Of Madness Pursues Stardom In A Desperate Attempt To Escape The Drudgery, Isolation, And Lovelessness Of Life On Her Parents’ Farm.”(IMDB, 2022). This Was My Second Time Watching This Film Having Seen It Once Before When It First Came Out In Cinemas And I Feel That It Still Holds Up As One Of My Favourite Films. I Do Prefer This Film To X As I Feel That There Is A Clearer Backstory And The Audience Is Given A Bit More Time To Connect With The Main Character Which I Felt That X Didn’t Do As Much As There Was A Lot Left Unexplored. I Also Love How Pearl Is Filmed In Technicolour As I Feel That This Was A Great Choice As The Audience Is Able To Have More Of An Understanding Of Pearl As A Character Showing What Her World And Her Dreams Look Like. This Is A Very Different Film To X Despite Them Being In The Same Series However There Are A Lot Of Similarities Ranging From The Little Easter Eggs That Are Scattered Throughout The Film As Well As The Overall Style That Ti West Has A Whole.
The Second Of His Films That I Had Watched Was The Next Film In This Series X, Which Came Out In 2022. “ In 1979, A Group Of Young Filmmakers Set Out To Make An Adult Film In Rural Texas, But When Their Reclusive Elderly Hosts Catch Them In The Act, The Crew Find Themselves Fighting For Their Lives.” (IMDB, 2022). This Was My Second Time Watching This Film And Although I Still Really Like The Film, I Didn’t Enjoy It As Much As I Did The First Time That I Had Watched It. I Love How This Film Is Just A Horror Film On The Surface But Deep Down It Is So Much More, The Film Not Only Has A Dedication To The Love And The Craft Of Filmmaking But Pays Tribute To The Slasher Films That Have Come Before It. The Colouring Of The Film Gives A Major Reference To The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Which I Think Is Really Cool.
There Are Two Ways You Can Watch This Series In Chronological Order Or By Release Date, I Have Done Both But In Found That I Preferred Watching It In Chronological Order The Best. If You Start With X, You Get Started Off In Modern Time Almost Going In Blind So The Characters And The Setting Is All New, It Also Makes The Easter Eggs That Are Seen In Pearl A Lot Easier To Spot. However, If You Start With Pearl, You Get A Better Understanding Of The Character And The Story Before Going Into The Future, The Easter Eggs That Are Seen In Pearl Turn Into Foreshadowing For What Is Going To Happen And How History Is Almost Repeating Itself.

Further Research:
After Doing Some Research Into The Biography Of Jordan Peele I Wanted To Know More About Him As A Person, I Did This By Looking At Different Interviews And Videos Of Him. I Knew Of Jordan Peele From Him Being Really Popular In The Horror Genre But I Wanted To Learn More As I Knew Of His Films Rather Than Who He Was As A Director Or Person. This Will Allow Me To Have A Better Feel Of The Director As I Will Be Able To See What They Are Like As A Person Which Will Then Lead Me To Have A Deeper Understanding Of His Works And Why He Chooses His Certain Style. I Found That This Was Really Helpful As I Was Able To Have An Understanding About What He Is Like Seperated From The Films He Has Created Instead Of Just Reading Some Information Online. I Found A Range Of Media To Do This Using Videos And Articles Which Altogether Will Give Me A Better Understanding About The Director.

Further Research- Thoughts And Opinions:
After Having A Look At The Feel Of The Director, I Then Went Onto Doing Some More Research On Jordan Peele’s Films Focusing On Two Things. One Of The Things That I Focused On Was Why He Chose To Use Certain Aspects In His Films. I Wanted To Do This Research As I Have Watched All Of His Films And I Wanted To Find Out More Information On Why He Did Something The Way He Did. Another One Of The Things That I Focused On Was What Other People Thought About His Films. Again, I Have Watched All Of His Films And Have Formed My Own Opinions About Them But I Wanted To See What Everyone Else Thought As Everyone Has Different Opinions. This Means That Someone Could Have A Completely Different Opinion To What I Thought About His Films. This Will Then Give Me A Deeper Knowledge When It Comes To My Podcast Instead Of Just Sticking To My Own Opinions. This Will Help Me When It Comes To My Podcast As Not Only Will I Be Able To Have An Understanding On Why The Director Did Something A Certain Way But Also Have Different Opinions From Different People.

Watching His Films:
A Part Of The Research That I Did For The Director Jordan Peele Was Watching His Films That He Had Created These Were Get Out, Us And Nope.
Watching Jordan Peele’s Films Will Help Me When I Go Onto Creating My Podcast As I Will Have A Deeper Knowledge Of The Director. As I Have Watched His Films Myself, I Am Able To Come Up With My Own Feelings About The Films Rather Than Using Other People’s Feelings. This Has Given Me A Better Idea Of What His Style Is Like And How He Uses This In His Films Or How It Is Different. I Feel That Doing This Will Give Me A Greater Understanding Of Who He Is As A Director And His Style When I Go Onto Create My Podcast. This Will Allow Me To Have A Better Knowledge Of His Films As I Have Seen Them Myself Which Will Make The Knowledge More Personal So My Audience Can Stay Engaged And Learn Something New.
The First Of His Films That I Watched Was His Feature Film, Get Out Which Came Out In 2017. A Young African American Visits His White Girlfriend’s Parents For The Weekend, Where His Simmering Uneasiness About Their Reception Of Him Eventually Reaches Boiling Point”. (IMDB, 2017). This Was My First Time Watching This Film And My First Time Watching One Of His Films Even Though I Have Been Wanting To For A While. I Really Enjoyed This Film And Found That It Actually Had Quite A Scary Premises, This Was Not In The Traditional Horror Way But The Film Made You Really Think Which I Feel Are The Films That Create The Most Fear. I Also Liked How There Was A Comedical Side To This Film As It Did Lighten The Mood A Bit But It Also Made Me Feel A Little Uneasy In A More Awkward Way. I Would Recommend Watching This Film With No Prior Knowledge And Just Go In Completely Blind However I Didn’t Do This And Knew A Little Bit About The Big Twist But I Was Still Surprised When Watching The Film.
The Next Film That I Watched Was His Latest Film Nope Which Came Out In 2022. “The Residents Of A Lonely Gulch In Inland California Bear Witness To An Uncanny And Chilling Discovery.” (IMDB, 2022). This Was My First Time Watching This Film And I Have Been Wanting To Watch It Since It Came Out In Cinemas But Just Never Had The Time. I Really Enjoyed This Film And I Am Still Wrapping My Head Around All The Hidden Messages And How There Are So Many Connections Throughout The Film. I Have Not Been Able To Stop Thinking About This Film And Find It So Clever, I Feel That It Is Something With Quite A Simple Basis But I Feel That It Creates Something Fresh And New While Having Nods To Other Films. I Felt That It Had A Big Reference To Jaws In The Way The Alien Had Almost Its Own Entrance So You Knew It Was Coming And You Don’t Actually See It Fully Until Near The End Of The Film. I Would Have Liked To Have Seen A Bit More Of An Ending Because It Kind Of Just Stops Without Giving Any Other Information So There Is No Clarification Of What’s Next.
The Last Of His Films That I Watched Was His Film Us Which Came Out In 2019. “Adelaide Wilson And Her Family Are Attacked By Mysterious Figures Dressed In Red. Upon Closer Inspection, The Wilsons Realise That The Intruders Are Exact Lookalikes Of Them.” (IMDB, 2019). This Was My First Time Watching This Film And I Didn’t Enjoy It As Much As I Thought I Would. I Feel That I Created Too Much Personal Hype For This Film And Believed That It Was Going To Be One Of His More Frightening Films Due To The Concept But This Wasn’t Really The Case. I Found That I Liked The Premise And Thought That It Was Very Clever How It Revealed More Connects Every Time That I Thought About It. Although I Have Mixed Feelings About The Film, I Have Not Stopped Thinking About It As I Keep Trying To Connect Everything Together And Work Things Out. I Would Have Liked To Know More Information As There Was A Lot That Was Never Explored Which Left Me Quite Confused Especially With One Of The Big Twists As It Wasn’t Explained Enough As To Why And How It Happened.

Watching Her Films:
A Part Of The Research That I Did For The Director Greta Gerwig Was Watching The Films She Had Created These Were Lady Bird, Little Women And Barbie.
Watching Some Of Greta Gerwig’s Films Will Help Me When I Go Onto. Create My Podcast As I Will Have An In-Depth Knowledge Of The Director. As I Have Watched Her Films Myself, I Am Able To Come Up With My Own Thoughts And Feelings On The Films Rather Than Just Using Other People’s Feelings. This Has Given Me A Better Understanding Of Her Style And How This Is Used In Her Films Or How It Changes. I Feel That Doing This Will Give Me A Better Idea Of Who She Is As A Director And Her Style For When I Go Onto Create The Podcast. This Will Allow Me To Have A Greater Knowledge Of Her Films As I Have Been Able To Watch Them Myself Which Will Then Allow Me To Have Information For My Audience That Is Both Reliable And Personal Which Will Then Keep Them Engaged In The Podcast And Learn Something New.
The First Of Her Films That I Watched Was Her Feature Film Lady Bird Which Came Out In 2017. “In 2002, An Artistically Inclined 17-Year-Old Girl Comes Of Age In Sacramento, California.” (IMDB, 2017). This Was The First Time That I Had Watched This Film And Although I Did Enjoy It, I Didn’t Like It As Much As Her Other Films. I Think That It Is A Great Film But I Feel That It Is Almost Missing The Magic Of Her Other Films, As I Can Watch Them Over And Over Again Without Getting Bored But I Didn’t Really Have The Feeling To Do So With This Film. However, I Do Like How It Breaks The Stereotypical Genre Conventions Of A Coming-Of-Age Film, Especially One With A Female Lead, As This Film Focuses On Lady Bird As A Person And How She Is Trying To Find Herself Rather Than Which Love Interest She Chooses. The Film Also Focuses On The Other Relationships That Surround Her Like How She Has A Rocky Relationship With Her Mother. I Also Thought That The Film Showed The Struggles Of Growing Up And Trying To Find Yourself In Your Teen Years Really Well As It Is A Struggle. The Film Didn’t Really Show It As Glamourous And Took A Realistic Approach Showing The Flaws And The Mistakes That Come With Growing Up.
The Second Of Her Films That I Watched Was Her Next Film Little Women Which Came Out In 2019. “Jo March Reflects Back And Forth On Her Life, Telling The Beloved Story Of The March Sisters – Four Young Women, Each Determined To Live Life On Her Own Terms.” (IMDB, 2019). This Was One Of The Many Times That I Have Watched This Film And There Is Just Something So Comforting About It. I Love How Different It Is To All Of The Other Little Women Adaptations As It Feels A Lot More Accurate To The Characters Personality’s. I Like How Jo Gets The Ending That She Deserves And Is Much More Suited To Her, As Instead Of Getting Married She Gets Her Book Published. I Also Like How The Film Has A Non-Linear Timeline Which Switches Back And Forth Between Childhood And Present Time Which Almost Feels Like You Are Looking Back At A Memory With The Characters Which Allows The You To Feel More Connected. I Just Find That There Is Something So Special About This Film That Gives Off Such A Cosy Vibe Which Allows You To Never Get Bored With It And Are Able Watch The Film Time And Time Again.
The Last Of Her Films That I Watched Was Her Latest Film Barbie Which Came Out In 2023. “Barbie And Ken Are Having The Time Of Their Lives In The Colourful And Seemingly Perfect World Of Barbie Land. However, When They Get A Chance To Go To The Real World, They Soon Discover The Joys And Perils Of Living Among Humans.” (IMDB, 2023). This Was One Of The Many Times That I Have Seen This Films And It Is One Of My Favourite Films Of All Time. There Is Something About This Film That Is So Magical, The First Time I Saw It Was In A Packed Theatre A Day Before It Was Released And It Was One Of The Most Amazing Experiences That I Have Ever Had At A Cinema. Since Then, I Haven’t Stopped Watching It, I Can Never Get Bored Of This Film As It So Special To Me. The Fact That It Brought So Many People Of Different Generations Together From Young Kids To The Elderly, Female And Male All Dressed Up In Pink To See A Film That Would Be So Important To Many People. It Looks So Fun And Colourful On The Surface So You Expect That It Would Be A Light Film But It Is So Much Deeper Than That And Focuses On Some Really Important Topics. It Healed So Many Peoples Inner Child And Resonated With Them So That They Felt Heard.

Tim Burton:
Biography:
Tim Burton Is An American Producer, Writer, Animator And Director Who Was Born On August 25th, 1985. During His Teenage Years He Would Make Stop Motion Animation Short Films In His Backyard, He Would Use Crude Stop Motion And Would Film On 8mm Film Without The Sound. The First Short Film That He Created Was At The Age Of 13 And It Was Called The Island Of Doctor Agor. Later He Went To California Institute Of The Arts And Studied Character Animation, Here He Created The Short Films Stalk Of The Celery Monster As Well As King And Octopus. When He Created Stalk Of The Celery Monster, He Got Some Interest From Walt Disney Productions And Was Offered An Animators Apprenticeship. While He Was There, He Worked A Variety Of Different Roles Including Animator, Storyboard Artist, Graphic Designer, Art Director And Concept Artist. Although The Concept Art He Worked On Never Made It To The Final Films He Worked On The Fox And The Hound, The Black Cauldron And Tron. In 1982 He Created A Six-Minute-Long Short Film With Disney Called Vincent, It Was Based On A Poem He Had Written As A Teenager About A Boy Who Pretended That He Was Is Hero Vincent Price. His First Live-Action Production Was A Japanese Type Adaptation Of The Fairy Tale Hansel And Gretel Which Was Premiered On Disney Channel Once In 1983. It Is Now Extremely Hard To Find And Has Only Been On Public Display A Few Times Both At The Museum Of Modern Art In 2009 And 2011 As Well As The Seoul Museum Of Art In 2012. His Next Short Film Was Frakenweenine Which Came Out In 1984, He Ended Up Being Fired By Disney As The Film He Had Created Was Too Dark And Scary For Kids. However, Paul Reuben Had Seen The Film And Asked Him To Direct For Pee- Wees Big Adventure Which Came Out In 1985, This Was His First Feature Length Film. The Film Had A Budget Of 8 Million And Grossed For Over 40 Million, This Was Also The First Time He Worked With Danny Elfman Who Has Gone Onto To Do The Score For Most Of His Films. His Next Big Project Was Beetlejuice In 1988, The Film Had Quite A Low Budget And Grossed For Over 80 Million Dollars. It Won An Oscar For Best Makeup And Later Had An Animated Series Based On The Film That Ran On ABC Then On Fox. He Was Able To Receive His First Big Budget Film By Impressing Studios As He Produced Low Budget Films That Became Hits. Batman Which Came Out 1989, Had A Lot Of Problems On Set Mainly Due To Casting Tim Burton Wanted To Have Michael Keaton To Play Batman But The Producers Told Him That This Was A Bad Choice. Michael Keaton Ended Up Getting Cast But Warner Brothers Lost Money In Their Share Price Due To Fans Not Liking The Casting. He Thought That Hiring Someone Who Was Bulked Up Was Stupid As It Should Be An Ordinary Man Who Dresses Up In A Bat Costume To Fight Crime. When Jack Nicholson Was Cast As The Joker It Helped With The Casting Fears From Fans And Drew In An Older Audiences Who Were Not Interested In Superhero Films. Batman Was One Of His Biggest Box Office Hits Grossing Over 200 Million Dollars Just In The US And 400 Million Dollars World Wide, It Also Had One Of The Biggest Marketing And Merchandise Campaign Of All Time. The Film Earned Critical Acclaim And Won An Oscar For Best Art Director, This Also Helped Establish Him As A Profitable Director. This Film Had A huge Influence On Future Superhero Films As He Gave The Characters More Psychological Depth And The Film A Grimmer More Realistic Look, Which Went Onto Inspire Batman The Animated Series As It Allowed For A Darker Batman To Be On TV. His Next Film Edward Scissorhands Came Out In 1990, The Idea Came From A Drawing That He Did In High School And Can Be Seen As An Autobiography Of His Childhood. He Says That The Film Is The Most Personal As It Is A Representation Of Him Not Being Able To Communicate Well With Other As A Teenager. He Then Went Onto Create A Sequel For Batman, In 1992, Batman Returns, There Was Some Controversy Surrounding The Film As It Was A Lot Darker Than The First One So It Might Be Too Scary For Kids And Catwoman’s Costume Was Overly Sexualised. He Also Made A Lot Of Changes To The Penguins Character Inspiring Future Renditions Of The Character Both In Tv And Comics, Instead Of Being An Ordinary Man He Now Looked More Like A Penguin. Although The Film Did Make Financial Success Grossing At 282.8 Million Dollars, It Was Not As Successful As The First Film. The Next Film He Only Produced Due To Time Constraints Due To Batman Returns, The Nightmare Before Christmas Which Came Out In 1993 And Was Based On Tim Burton’s World And Characters. It Did Quite Well At The Box Office Grossing At 50 Million But Disney Didn’t Want It Associated With Its Company So They Put It Out Through Touchstone Pictures Which Is A Disney Owned Company. There Were A Hundred People That Worked To Create The Character And The Film Took Three Years To Create. In 1994 He Co-produced Cabin Boy, He Was Supposed To Direct The Film But Handed The Directing To Adam Resnick Due To His Next Film. Ed Wood Released In 1994 Was A Smaller Scale Film That What He Usually Created And Focuses On The Life Of The Famous Director, Ed Wood. This Film Paid Tribute To The Low Budget Science Fiction Films And Horror Films That He Watched In His Childhood. The Film Quickly Became A Cult Classic Gaining Positive Reviews From Critics And Won Oscars For Best Supporting Actor And For Best Makeup. Tim Burton Didn’t Come Back To Create Another Batman Film And Was Replaced As Warner Brother Said That His Film Was Too Dark And Wasn’t Safe For Kids. In 1996 He Created His Next Film Mars Attack, Which Was A Mixture Of Both Live Action And Stop Motion Footage, It Did Not Do Well At The Box Office But Had Positive Reviews From Critics And Ended Up Being Nominated For An Oscar, Best Original Musical Or Comedy Score. The Film Won An Oscar For Best Art Direction And Two Baftas For Best Costume Design And Best Production Design. In 2001 He Went Onto Direct Planet Of The Apes Which Was Not A Remake Of The Previous Film. The Film Grossed For 68 Million Dollars On Opening Weekend And Earned 180 Million Dollars In Us And 362 Million Dollars Worldwide, The Film Has Had Mixed Reviews. His Next Film Big Fish Which Was Released In 2003 Was Based On The Book Big: Fish A Novel Of Mythic Proportions By Daniel Wallace, The Film Received Four Golden Globe Nominations And An Oscar For The Soundtrack. His Next Film Was An Adaptation Of Roald Dahls Book Charlie And The Chocolate Factory And Was Released In 2005. The Film Grossed For 207 Million Dollars And Got Nominated At The Oscars For Best Costume Design. Also, In 2005 He Worked On Corpse Bride Which Was His First Full Length Stop Motion Film, This Gained Critical Success Grossing At 118.1 Million Dollars With A 40 Million Dollar Budget And Was Nominated For An Oscar, Best Animated Feature. In 2006 And 2012 He Did A Music Video For The Killers, Bones From The Album Sam’s Town And Here With Me From The Album Battle Born. In 2007 He Directed Sweeny Todd: The Demon Barber From Fleet Street, Which Was Based On The Broadway Musical From 1979, The Film Grossed For 153 Million Dollars And Gained Critical Acclaim. For The Film He Won Best Director At The National Board Of Reviews, A Nomination At The Golden Globes For Best Director And Won An Oscar For Best Arts Director. In 2009 He Went To SDCC So That He Could Promote His New Films 9 And Alice In Wonderland. 9 Was A Feature Length Film Adaptation Of The Short Film By Shane Acker And Tim Burton Produced The Film. Alice In Wonderland Was Based On The Book By Lewis Carroll But Takes Place 13 Years After, The Film Was Supposed To Release In 2009 But Ended Up Being Released In 2010 And Won Two Oscars For Best Art Direction And Best Costume Design. The Film Got Mixed Reviews And Ended Up Grossing 1 Billion Worldwide, Which Was His Highest Grossing Film And Went Onto Produce The Sequel, Alice Through The Looking Glass. In 2012 He Directed Dark Shadow Which Was An Adaptation Of The 1960s TV Series, It Grossed For 245 Million Dollars Worldwide And Had A 150 Million Dollar Budget. Also, In 2012 He Remade His Short Film Frakenweenine Into A Feature Length Stop Motion Film, This Again Was Distributed By Walt Disney Pictures And Had Positive Reviews. In 2014 He Went Onto Direct Big Eyes Which Received Mainly Positive Reviews From Critics. Then In 2016 He Directed Miss Peregrines Home For Children Which Was An Adaptation Of The Book By Ransom Riggs. In 2019 He Directed A Live Action Dumbo, The Film Ended Up Grossing 353 Million Dollars But Had A 170 Million Dollar Budget And A 300 Million Dollar Advertising Cost So It Lost Money. In 2022 He Said He Won’t Be Working For Disney Again Due To His Style Being Not What Disney Was looking For. Also, In 2022 He Directed For The Tv Show Wednesday Which Received Critical Acclaim, He Hasn’t Directed For Tv Since The 1980s. In The Future There Is A Beetlejuice Sequel In The Works, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Which Is Planned To Come Out In September And It Has Been Announced That He Is Creating A Remake Of The Attack Of The 50 Foot Woman With Warner Brothers. He Is Best Known For Being As The Pioneer Of Goth Culture In The American Film Industry And His Fantasy And Gothic Horror Films. Some Of The People That He Frequently Collaborates With Include Winona Ryder, Michael Keaton, Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Catherine O’Hara And Christopher Lee. Watching His Films:
A Part Of The Research That I Did For The Director Tim Burton Was Watching Some Of The Films That He Had Created These Were Edward Scissorhands And Corpse Bride.
Watching Some Of Tim Burton’s Films Will Help Me When I Go Onto Create My Podcast As I Will Have A Greater Knowledge Of The Director. As I Have Watched Some Of His Films Myself, I Am Now Able To Come Up With My Own Opinions About Them Instead Of Just Using Other People’s Opinions. This Has Given Me An In Depth Understanding Of What His Style Consists Of And How He Uses This In His Films Or How It Changes. I Feel That Doing This Will Give Me A Better Idea Of Who He Is As A Director And His Style For When I Go Onto My Podcast. This Will Allow Me To Have Further Knowledge On His Films As I Have Watched Some Of Them Myself Which Will Then Allow Me To Have Information That Is Personal And Educational So That I Am Able To Keep My Audience Engaged And Informed.
The First Of His Films That I Watched Was His Film Corpse Bride Which Came Out In 2005. “When A Shy Groom Practices His Wedding Vows In The Inadvertent Presence Of A Deceased Young Woman, She Rises From The Grave Assuming He Has Married Her.” (IMDB, 2005). This Was My First Time Watching This Film, Even Though I Have Been Wanting To For A While, And I Really Enjoyed It. The Film Was Quite Short But I Felt That Everything Was Explored And It Wrapped Up Well With A Proper Ending. I Felt That The Film Had A Mixture Of Heartfelt Messages And A Bit Of Fun, As Some Parts Were Quite Meaningful Where As Others Were Really Fun. I Love The Style Of The Film As It Is The Classic Tim Burton Stop Motion Style And I Find This So Special Because There Is Just Something About It That Brings The Film To Life And Must Take Forever To Create These Worlds.
The Second Of His Films That I Watched Was His Film Edward Scissorhands Which Came Out In 1990. “The Solitary Life Of An Artificial Man – Wo Was Incompletely Constructed And Has Scissors For Hands – Is Upended When He Is Taken In By A Suburban Family.” (IMDB, 1990). This Was My First Time Watching This Film And I Fell In Love With It, Quickly Becoming One Of My Favourite Films. I Found That It Was So Beautiful And Relatable That I Had Never Seen Anything Like It. I Didn’t Expect It To Hit Me So Hard As I Was Expecting A Classic Tim Burton Film Where There Would Be Some Heartfelt Or Meaningful Moments But There Would Also Be Parts Which Were A Bit Of Fun. This Film Was So Easy For A Lot Of People To Relate To As They Might Have Understood The Message Behind The Film And Have Had Experiences Like It Before. I Also Liked How The Style Added To The Film As It Played A Big Role In Bringing The Story Together As It Helped To Bring The Message Of The Film To Life.

Representational Research- Neurodivergent Directors:
Neurodiversity In The Creative Industry:

There Are Not Many Well Known Directors That People Realise Are Neurodivergent Even Though They Are Out There. It Took Me A Lot Of Searching And Research To Find Some More Of These Directors That I Didn’t Know About. There Are Also A Lot Of Directors That Are Speculated To Be Neurodivergent But This Has Never Been Specifically Stated By Them.
Some Directors, Who Are Dyslexic, Include Steve McQueen, Ridley Scott, Spike Lee, David Lean, Guy Ritchie, Joe Wright, Stan Brakhage, George Lucas, Quentin Tarantino And Martin Scorsese.
Some Directors, Who Have ADHD Or Are Autistic Include Roger Graef, Daniel Kwan, Steven Spielberg, Alejandro G. Iñárritu, Stanley Kubrick And David F. Sandberg.
Even When Some Of The Well-Known Neurodivergent Directors Have Said That They Were Neurodivergent It Is Still Not Widely Known By Many People Unless It Is Specifically Searched Up Or It Is Seen In An Interview Where They Are Talking About Their Neurodiversity.
To Be Honest A Lot Of People In The Film Industry And The Creative Industry Are Neurodivergent Whether It Has Been Said That They Were Or If They Are Speculated To Be.
Some People In The Creative Industry That Are Neurodivergent Include Billie Eillish Has Tourette’s, Anthony Hopkins Is Autistic, Ryan Gosling Has ADHD And Hannah Daryl Is Autistic.

Throughout The Years There Has Been Film Festivals To Specifically Showcase Neurodivergent Voices In Film, The First Ever Film Festival Was Set Up In 2008.
The As Film Festival Was Founded In 2008 As Part Of A Larger Program From The Not Equal Association And Came From An Idea That Film Could Be Used As A Way For More Social Inclusion.
It Is Managed By A Mixture Of Both Neurotypical People And Neurodivergent People Being The First To Do So, It Is A Film Festival For Autistic People To Make Films But The Festival Is Not About Autism.
Neurodiversity In Films And Tv:

There Is Also Not Much Representation For Neurodiversity In Films And Tv Shows, If This Is Included It Is Often Negative And Stereotypical Representation.
In The Past Neurodiversity Especially Autism Was Presented Being A Genius In A Certain Subject And Not Being Able To Present Any Emotion. When There Was A Neurodivergent Character, They Would Be Used To Help The Neurotypical Character Grow As A Person Some Examples Of Some Films That Portray These Unrealistic And Negative Stereotypes Include Rain Man And The Boy Who Could Fly.
Even In More Recent Times There Is Still Roles That Harm The Autistic Community Like A Neurotypical Actor Playing A Neurodivergent Character.
One Of The Most Controversial Films Is Sia’s Music, She Uses A Neurotypical Actress To Play A Non-Verbal Autistic Character Which Is Bad Enough But The Actress Uses Specific Facial Expressions And Stimming To Make Her Look More Autistic.
There Is Some Progress With Autistic Representation In Film And Tv, There Is An American Tv Show Everything’s Going To Be Okay Which Came Out In 2020 Where Actress Kayla Cromer Was The First Autistic Person To Play An Autistic Character On American TV.
Another Example Is In 2022 With The Show Heartbreak High Where Chloe Hayden Also Was An Autistic Actress Who Played An Autistic Character And Was The First Person To Play An Autistic Character On Australian TV.
There Is Even A Sesame Street Character That Was Added In 2015 Called Julia Who Is Autistic, Which Helps People Understand Autism From A Young Age.
Although There Is Some Progress There Is Still Not Enough Representation For The Neurodivergent Community, The Neurodivergent Community Brought In The HeadCanon Which Is Where Neurodivergent People Can Claim A Character That May Present With Neurodiverse Traits But Not Be Officially Stated In The Film Or Tv Show.
Some Of My Favourite Headcanons Include:
Elle Woods From Legally Blonde- Autistic
Robin Buckley From Stranger Things- Autistic And ADHD
Wednesday Addams- Autistic
Lilo From Lilo And Stitch- Autistic
Harley Quinn- Bipolar Disorder
One Of The Biggest Headcanon's In The Community Is Sherlock Holmes Being Autistic, However The Actor Benedict Cumberbatch Has Said Some Very Ableist Comments About The Autistic Community As A Whole And How People Have Cannoned Sherlock As Autistic.

Action Research- Removing Background Noises:
One Of The Pieces Of Action Research That I Wanted To Do For This Stage Of The Final Major Project Was The Effect Of Removing Background Noises From Audio. I Wanted To Do This As When I Tried To Use This Effect Last Year On My Podcast It Didn’t Really Turn Out That Great, When I Went Onto The Production I Was So Confused Because It Wouldn’t Work With The Recorded Audio. For This Part Of Action Research, I Decided That I Was Going To Use An Old Piece Of Audio That I Recorded For A Previous Unit And Then I Looked Up YouTube Tutorials On How To Use This Effect And Found Two That I Watched Which I Thought Would Be Helpful To Learn This Effect. Both Of The Tutorials That I Watched Were Useful And Would Help Me During The Production Of The Podcast But I Only Used The First Tutorial In This Piece Of Action. This Was Because The First Tutorial Was More On Removing More General Background Noise Which Fit Better With The Audio Clip That I Used And The Second Tutorial Focused On Removing Different Types Of Background, Like Wind And Mouth Clicks, Then Showed The Different Ways To Do These.

Step By Step:
The First Thing That I Did To Create This Effect Was Find Some Old Audio That I Recorded From A Previous Unit. Once I Had Found The Audio Recording That I Wanted To Use, Then I Dragged And Dropped The File Into Adobe Audition.
The Second Thing That I Did Was Cut Out The Silent Gaps At The Beginning And The End, Where I Would Start And Finnish Recording The Audio. Once I Had Cut This, I Only Had The Actual Speaking Left Making Easier To Focus On Removing The Background Noise.
Once I Cut The Audio Down To Where I Needed It, I Then Used The Selector Tool Which Is The Little ‘I’ At The Top Of The Menu Bar And Selected All The Audio That I Wanted To Remove The Background Noise From, In This Case It Was The Entirety Of The Audio.
Once I Had All The Audio Selected, I Then Went On To Add The Effect Into The Audio. To Do This I Went To The Effects Panel At The Top Of The Software And Clicked On This, It Came Up With A Drop-Down Menu Where I Then Went On To Select Noise Reduction/Restoration. Again, This Selection Came Up With Another Drop-Down Menu Where I Clicked On The De-Noise Setting, This Then Came Up With A Panel Of Controls For The Effect.
When The Effect Panel Came Up, I Messed Around With The Settings Of The Effect. To Do This I Moved The Slider At The Bottom To See How Much Of The Background Noise Is Removed, The Higher The Number On The Slider The More Background Noise Is Removed But This Does Mean The Quality Of The Audio Decreases A Little. After Messing Around With The Different Percentages And Using The On And Off Button To See The Difference, I Settled On The Controls That I Wanted To Use And Went For The Percentage Of About 65 Percent. This Was A Good Amount For The Audio As It Removed Most Of The Background Noise And I Still Had A Good Quality Of Audio.
Final Effect:
Reflection:

Overall, I Think That This Effect Turned Out Pretty Well For The Audio That I Have Used. I Also Found That The Effect Was Quite Easy To Use And Will Help Me When I Go Onto The Production Stage As I Will Not Get As Confused. I Think That This Effect Removes Most Of The Background Noise And You Can Only Faintly Hear A Slight Buzz. I Do Also Have The Other Video That I Can Use On Top Of This As It Focuses On More Advanced Background Noise Removal For Example Mouth Clicks. This Means That I Can Add This Onto The Original Effect So That I Can Make The Removal Of The Background Noise Even Better. I Think That This Effect Will Really Help Me When I Go Onto The Production Stage As I Will Be Able To Use This Without Getting Confused On All Of My Audio And Have Different Levels Of Percentages Depending On How Much Of The Background Noise Needs Removing. I Do Think That It Would Be A Good Idea To Keep Practicing This Effect In My Own Time So When I Go Onto The Actual Production, I Know Exactly How To Create The Effect And It Will Be The Best That It Can Be.
Action Research-Volume Control:
Another One Of The Pieces Of Action Research That I Wanted To Do For This Stage Of The Final Major Project Was The Effect Of Balancing Out Audio Levels So Each Audio Clip Is Similar To Each Other. I Wanted To This As Although I Have Done Recording And Editing On Adobe Audition Before For Previous Units, I Have Never Learned How To Level Out The Audio. This Meant Some Of The Audio Clips Would Be Quieter Than The Other And Another One Of The Audio Clips Would Be Louder Than The Others, There Was No Balance. For This Part Of Action Research, I Decided That I Was Going To Use An Old Piece Of Audio That I Had Recorded For A Previous Unit, This Was Also The Same Audio Clip That I Used For The Action Research For Removing The Background Noise. To Do This I Looked Up YouTube Tutorials On The Subject And When I Found One That I Thought Would Be Helpful I Watched The Video, Then I Went Onto Practice The Steps In Adobe Audition For My Own Audio.

Step By Step:
The First Thing That I Did To Create This Effect Was Find Some Old Audio That I Had Previously Used In A Past Unit, This Was Also The Same Piece Of Audio That I Used When I Tested Out The Tutorial For Removing Background Noise. Once I Had Found The Audio Recording That I Wanted To Use I Dragged And Dropped The Audio File Into Adobe Audition.
The Next Thing That I Did Was Cut Out The Silent Gaps At The Beginning And The End, Where I Would Usually Start And End The Recording. Once I Had Done This, I Only Had The Main Speaking Left Which Made This A Lot Easier To Focus On Levelling Out The Audio.
After This I Went Onto Creating The Actual Effect, To Do This I Went To The Effects Panel At The Top Of The Software When I Clicked On This It Brought Up A Drop-Down Menu Where I Then Selected Amplitude And Compression, This Then Again Brought Up A Drop-Down Menu Where I Selected Tube Model Compressor. This Can Also Be More Easily Done In The Effects Rack Where You Select The Little Arrow Choose Amplitude And Compression Then Select Tube Model Compressor, I Did Not Know How To Do This At The Time.
When I Had Selected This A Control Panel Came Up For The Effect, There Were A Few Different Options That Could Be Changed Like The Threshold, Output Gain, Ratio, Attack And Release. I Decided To Keep The Controls Quite Near To The Video And Like The Tutorial Said I Did Not Put Any Output Grain Due To The Next Effect Used Was Similar To This. In The End I Used A Threshold Of 12 Dbs, A Ratio Of 3x:1, An Attack Of 10 Ms And A Release At 100 Ms.
After This I Added The Next Effect, To Do This I Went Back To The Effects Panel At The Top Of The Software Which Then Brought Up A Drop Down Menu Where I Selected Amplitude And Compression, This Then Again Brought Up Another Drop Down Menu Where I Selected Hard Limiter. This Can Also Be More Easily Done In The Effects Rack Where You Select The Little Arrow Choose Amplitude And Compression Then Select Hard Limiter, I Did Not Know How To Do This At The Time.
This Then Came Up With A Control Panel That Had Different Option That You Could Change Like Maximum Amplitude, Input Boost, Look-Ahead Time And Release Time. For This Piece Of Audio, I Kept All The Settings For The Effect On Default Like The Tutorial I Watched Said To Do. This Was Maximum Amplitude At -1 Db, Input Boost At 0.0 Db, Look Ahead Time At 7 Ms And Release Time At 100 Ms.
Final Effect:
Reflection:

Overall, I Didn’t Like How This Effect Turned Out As Although It Was Quite Straight Forward To Use, I Felt Like It Didn’t Really Do Anything To Level Out The Audio There Wasn’t Much Difference Between The Audio Before And After. This Made Me Think That This Effect Would Probably Not Work For My Podcast As It Doesn’t Make Much Of A Change And I Want The Levels Of The Audio To Be Roughly The Same. I Decided As This Tutorial Didn’t Work Out, I Was Going To Go Back On YouTube And Find Another One To Try. Once I Had Found One That I Thought Could Work, I Used The Same Piece Of Audio And Went Into Adobe Audition To Try Out The Tutorial Hoping That This One Would Work Better.
Second Tutorial:
Mike Russell (2020) How To Get Volume Levels The Same – Adobe Audition Tutorial. Available From: https://youtu.be/izbmLO83DX0?si=5ZAAMK5QvD5bshJS (Accessed 29 February 2024)
Step By Step:
The First Thing That I Did To Create This Effect Was Find Another Piece Of Old Audio, That I Had Previously Used In A Past Unit, So That I Could Add This To The Other Piece Of Audio That I Already Had. The New Tutorial That I Was Using Had Two Pieces Of Audio So I Decided To Do This As Well As It Would Make It Easier To Follow The Tutorial. Once I Had Found Another Piece Of Audio Recording That I Wanted To Use I Then Dragged And Dropped The Audio Files Into Adobe Audition.
The Next Thing That I Did Was Create A Multitrack Mix, To Do This I Went To The Multitrack Button Near The Top Of The Software And Clicked On This. Then A Menu Popped Up Which Allowed Me To Change Some Of The Setting, Rename The File And Decide Where I Wanted It To Save, I Kept All Of The Other Settings At Default.
After I Had Done This, I Then Went Onto Cutting The Audio Clips To The Right Length. Again, I Cut Out The Beginning And The End Of The Audio Where I Would Have Started And Ended The Recording So That There Were No Long Gaps Of Silence. This Then Only Gave Me The Actual Audio To Focus On Which Made It A Lot Easier To Focus On.
When I Had Done This, I Started Working On Adding The Effect, To Do This I Selected All Of The Audio Clips That I Wanted To Use The Effect On With The ‘I’ Tool And Then Right Clicked The Selected Clips. This Came Up With A Menu With Different Options And I Selected Match Clip Loudness.
After I Had Selected Match Clip Loudness A Control Panel Came Up For The Effect, There Is A Few Different Options To Change Which Are Match To, Target Loudness And Tolerance. I Didn’t Mess With Any Of The Settings And Kept It All On Default.
Then I Moved Onto The Next Thing I Needed To Do To Create This Effect, First I Clicked On One Of The Pieces Of Audio, The Green One, And Brought Up The Effects Rack For This. Once The Effects Rack Was Open, I Went To The Little Arrow And Clicked On It This Brought Up A Drop-Down Menu Where I Selected Amplitude And Compression, This Again Brought Up Another Drop-Down Menu Where I Selected Dynamics. I Would Then Do The Same Process For The Other Piece Of Audio, The Purple One, Once I Had Finished All The Step For The Green Piece Of Audio.
After I Had Selected The Effect A Control Panel Came Up With Different Options To Change, These Included The AutoGate, The Compressor And The Expander. For This Specific Effect I Only Needed To Use The Compressor So I Selected This At The Top Of The Control Panel. Then There Were A Few More Options To Choose From Including Threshold, Ratio, Attack, Release And Makeup. I Only Used A Couple Of These Setting Starting With Changing The Ratio To About Three. Once I Had Done This, I Changed The Threshold By Turning The Dial Until A Few Red Lights Came Flashing Up At The Top, This Was About -20 Db. When The Lights Started Flashing, I Then Changed The Makeup Which Made The Volume Level Louder And Clearer, I Made Sure That I Didn’t Go Into The Red On The Noise Levels Which Came To About 10 Db. Again, I Then Repeated This Step For The Other Piece Of Audio, The Purple One, After I Had Finished Working On The Green Piece Of Audio.
After I Had Down The Past Two Steps On Both Pieces Of Audio, I Then Messed Around With The Different Controls On Each Of Them To See If I Could Get The Audio Levels About The Same. After Looking At Both The Pieces Of Audio I Chose The One That I Thought Sounded The Best And Then Looked At The Audio Level At The Bottom Of The Screen To See Where About It Sat. Then I Went To The Other Piece Of Audio And Messed Around With The Controls Until I Got A Similar Level To The Other Piece Of Audio. Then I Looked At Both The Audio Levels Again And Messed Around With The Controls Just To Make Sure Everything Was Lining Up As It Roughly Should.
When I Had Done All Of This, I Had Created My Final Effect, I Wanted To See The Change That I Had Made To The Audio Visually. To Do This I Went To The Top Of The Software And Selected The Multitrack Button Which Then Brought Up A Drop-Down Menu Where I Went Onto Select Mixdown Session To New File Which Again Brought Up Another Drop Down Menu Where I Then Selected Entire Session.
When I Selected These Options, I Was Then Able To See What My Audio Looked Like After The Effect Had Been Added Onto It. This Also Allowed My Separate Audio Files To Be Combined In One Big Audio File.
Final Effect:
Reflection:

Overall, I Felt That This Effect Worked Out Really Well, My Audio Levels Where Around The Same Level So I Didn’t Have One Piece Of Audio Louder Or Quieter Than The Other. Although There Was A Bit More To Do To Create This Effect, I Feel That It Works A Whole Lot Better Than The Other Effect That I Had Tried Previously. I Felt That The Previous Effect Didn’t Show Much Difference Between The Before And After Audio Where I Find That This Effect There Is A Clearer Difference. The Tutorial That I Watched Was Actually Quite Simple To Follow And I Only Got Confused On One Thing Which Was Quickly Sorted Out. This Was The Effects Rack Although It Took A Couple Of Tries To Know What I Was Doing Wrong I Worked It Out In The End And Now Know Exactly What I Need To Do. I Think That This Effect Will Help Me When I Go Onto The Production Stage Of My Podcast As I Now Have A Clear Idea On How To Do This And I Am Able To Tailor Each Piece Of Audio So That The Levels Are Roughly The Same. I Would Like To Do Some More Practice On This Effect In My Own Time So When I Go Onto The Production Stage It Will Be The Best That It Can Be.
Action Research- Creating Better Sound:
Another One Of The Pieces Of Action Research That I Wanted To Do For This Stage Of The Final Major Project Was To Learn About The Ways That I Can Make My Podcast Sound Better. I Wanted To Do This So That My Podcast Has Sound That Can Be Clearly Understood By The Audience. For This Piece Of Action Research, I Decided To Go To YouTube And Search For A Tutorial That I Thought Would Be Helpful For What I Wanted To Learn And Then I Found A Piece Of Old Audio From A Previous Unit To Practice The Effects On. I Felt That This Tutorial Would Be Helpful For When I Go Onto Create My Podcast As It Will Allow Me To Have A Greater Knowledge About What I Should Do To Make My Audio The Best That It Can Be. Then In Combination With The Background Noise And Volume Levelling Effect This Will Be Very Effective For My Podcast.

Step By Step:
The First Thing That I Did To Create This Effect Was Find An Old Piece Of Audio That I Had From A Previous Unit So That I Had Something To Practice The Effects On, I Then Added The Audio Into The File Section Of Adobe Audition.
When I Had Done This I Then Went To The Multitrack Button At The Top Of The Software And Clicked On It So That I Could Create A Multitrack Mixdown, This Allowed Me To Make Edits To The Audio Without Changing The Original Piece.
Once I Had Dragged The Audio In, I Then Went Onto Starting To Create One Of The Effects, The First Thing That I Did Was Go To The Effects Rack Then I Selected Noise Reduction/Restoration Which Came Up With A Drop-Down Menu Where I Selected Dereverb, This Allowed Me To Remove Any Room Echo From The Audio.
Then The Settings For The Effect Came Up And I Played Around With The Slider To Get The Right Percentage For The Audio, The Only Thing With This Effect Is The Higher The Percentage The Lower Quality The Audio Will Be. I Chose Around Forty Percent As I Felt That This Worked The Best For The Audio Without Losing Any Of The Quality.
After I Had Finished This It Was Time To Move Onto The Next Effect, The First Thing That I Did Was Click Back Onto The Waveform So I Could See The Original Audio. Then Once I Had Got There, I Selected The Entire Thing And Then Copied It Over To A New Audio File Which I Named Duplicate. This Allowed Me To Make Changes To The Audio Without Making These Changes Permanent To The Original Audio.
Then I Pasted The Audio Into The New Duplicate File And Went Onto Cutting Out All Of The Talking Only Leaving The Gaps Where There Were Breathes In. This Was So I Could Take An Amplitude Statistics So I Could Make Sure That I Could Remove These Sounds.
After This I Selected All Of The Audio That Was Left Which Was The Breaths And Then I Went To The Top Of The Software Choosing The Windows Button, A Drop-Down Menu Came Up Where I Selected Amplitude Statistics. It Is Best To Undock This Tap As There Are A Lot Of Statistics To Be Seen/
Once I Got All Of The Statistics Up, I Went Back To The Multitrack Mixdown And Found The Audio That Had Been Edited, I Then Went To The Effects Rack And Selected Amplitude And Compression Which Will Come Up With A Drop-Down Menu Where I Selected Dynamics.
When I Had Done This A Menu Popped Up With All The Settings For This Effect, I Went To The Audio Gate And I Selected The Little Tick At The Top. Then I Went To The Threshold Where I Put In The Number Closest To The Number That Was The Audio’s Peak Amplitude From The Statistics Which For Me Was 22. This Clipped The Audio A Lot So I Put The Hold Up To Stop This I Did This To About 50. There Was Also An Option To Create Something Softer Where You Did The Same Steps With The Expander But I Didn’t Do This.
After Doing This There Was Still A Bit Of Clipping And Stumbling Over The Words So It Did This I Would Go To The Razor Tool And Cut Any Parts That Did That Then Joined The Clips Back Together, I Did This Slightly On Top Of Each Other To Create A Faded Transition.
For The Last Effect I Clicked On A Piece Of Audio Then Went To The Effects Rack Selecting Filter And EQ Which Came Up With A Drop-Down Menu Where I Selected Parametric Equalizer, I Then Did This For The Other Parts Of The Audio.
Finally, The Effect Settings Panel Came Up, I Set Everything To Default And Then Found The High Point, HP, Fading This Out Until The Voice In The Audio Thinned Out. Once It Had Got To This Point, I Faded It In A Bit Until I Could Hear The Voice Clearly Which For Me Ranged At Around 200. After I Had Done This, I Then Repeated The Process On The Other Pieces Of Audio Making Sure They Roughly Sounded The Same.
Final Audios:
Reflection-
Overall, I Felt That This Tutorial To Learn A Few Different Effects Didn’t Completely Work With The Audio That I Had Used. For The Effect To Remove Any Breaths Or Similar Noises, I Don’t Know If I Was Doing It Wrong But It Just Made My Audio Sound Worse. The Breaths Were Gone But The Audio Was Clipping So Much That It Sounded Really Bad, I Tried Everything That The Tutorial Said To Fix It But Nothing I Did Fixed This Issue. This Would Probably Be Something That I Would Leave Out Of My Podcast And I Might Just Remove The Breaths Manually Although This Takes A Bit More Time, I Feel That I Will Sound A Lot Better. When Adding The Parametric Equalizer Effect I Didn’t Notice That Much Difference To The Audio I Don’t Know If This Was Because It Was The Last Effect That I Added So I Wasn’t Able To Really Hear What It Sounded Like Over The Bad Audio From The Previous Effect But I Felt Like It Did Nothing. I Have Decided That I Might Leave This For Now And If Later On I Need This Effect For My Podcast, I Can Practice It With An Unedited Piece Of Audio. However, I Thought That The Effect Of Dereverb So That I Can Remove Background Echoes From The Audio Will Work Really Well For My Podcast. I Feel That This Would Work Well In Combination With The Other Effect That I Have Learnt But I Would Probably Not Use The Other Two Effects As I Feel They Don’t Improve The Audio And Just Seem To Make It Worse.
Action Research-Exporting And Using The Podcast:
The Last Piece Of Action Research That I Wanted To Do For This Stage Of The Final Major Project Was To Learn How To Get My Podcast Ready To Be Exported And Used. I Wanted To Do This As I Have Looked At A Lot Of Different Effects That I Could Include In My Podcast But I Have Never Looked At How To Make Sure That The Podcast Sounds The Best It Can Be As A Whole Before Being Exported And Used. I Decided To Go To YouTube And Found A Tutorial That I Thought Would Be Helpful For What I Wanted To Do, Then I Went To Adobe Audition To Familiarize Myself With The Different Steps That I Needed To Do And Where I Could Find This So I Have A Clear Idea When I Go Onto My Podcast. I Decided Not To Use Any Audio For This Tutorial And Just Look At How To Do These Steps As I Have Not Created My Actual Podcast Yet, To Create The Steps In The Tutorial You Need To Have The Final Podcast With All The Effects Applied Which I Don’t Have Yet And I Don’t Have Any Old Audio That Would Fit Into This Category.

Step By Step:
The First Thing That I Did Was Create A Multitrack Mixdown, I Didn’t Put Any Audio In So I Left The Tracks Empty. I Kept About Two Tracks To Have An Example Of What It Could Look Like And Then Deleted All The Rest Of The Tracks, I Then Selected The Mix Track At The Bottom Of The Mixdown.
Once I Had Done This, I Went To The Effect Rack For The Mix Track And Went To The Track Settings. I Then Went To Special Which Came Up With A Drop-Down Menu Where I Selected Mastering.
This Then Brought Up The Settings For The Effect, The Best Preset To Use For Podcasts Is Subtle Clarity So I Selected This And Then I Turned Off The Reverb For This Effect.
The Next Thing That I Did Was Go Back To The Effects Rack And Also Selected Special Which Came Up With A Drop-Down Menu Where I Selected Loudness Meter. This Effects Helps Get The Right Audio Level For The Streaming Platform That Is Used For The Podcast.
This Then Came Up With The Settings For The Effect Where Different Platforms That Are Used For Podcasts Could Be Selected, This Would Then Come Up With The Audio Level That Is Needed For That Platform.
For This Practice I Chose Apple Podcasts And Then Went To The Setting Button At The Top Which Gave Me All Of The Information That I Needed To Keep My Podcast At The Right Audio Level. This Was -16 Lufs So That Meant That When I Listened Back To My Podcast The Integrated Audio Should Be Around -16 Lufs.
If This Was Over The Number That I Needed For The Audio Level Then I Could Go To The Effects Rack Then Pull The Loudness Meter Down And Then I Went To Amplitude And Compression Which Will Come Up With A Drop-Down Menu Where I Selected Amplify. I Made Sure That This New Effect Was In The Middle Between The Mastering And The Loudness Meter.
This Then Brought Up A Setting Panel For The Effect, I Then Brought Down The Gain To The Point Of A Decimal, I Would Continue Playing Around With The Numbers Until The Integrated Number Was Closer To The -16 Lufs.
If I Had Decided That I Was Happy With How My Podcast Turned Out, I Could Then Go Up To The File Button At The Top Of The Software Selecting Export This Came Up With A Drop-Down Menu Where I Selected Multitrack Mixdown And Then Selected The Entire Section. This Then Brought Up A Section Which Had Aspects Like What Format I Wanted It To Be, Where I Wanted It To Be Saved To And What I Wanted It To Be Called.
If I Wanted To Change The Audio Levels For Any Reason Like For Example Putting The Podcast On Another Listening Platform, I Could Go To The Multitrack Button At The Top Of The Software Where I Would Select Multitrack Session To New File And Then Entire Session. Once I Had Done This I Went To The Windows Button At The Top Of The Software Where I Would Select Match Clip Loudness, This Will Bring Up A Box To Drag Audio Files In, If You Press The Run Button It Will Tell You What Loudness It Is Already At.
In This Box There Is A Pull Up Tab Which Can Be Dragged Up And Down, This Has A Section For Target Loudness Where Any Number Can Be Typed In And It Will Change All Of The Audio To That Level.
Reflection-

Overall, I Felt That This Tutorial Will Actually Work Well And I Think That It Will Be Really Helpful For When I Go Onto Edit My Podcast And Try This Out. This Will Help Me As I Will Be Able To Get My Podcast The Best It Can Be When Exporting And I Am Also Able To Get The Podcast Ready As If It Is Being Uploaded To A Listening Platform Which Will Make My Podcast Sound Better Overall. As Well As This It Will Allow Me To Make Sure That I Can Add Any Final Touches To My Podcast As A Whole So The Audience Will Have The Best Listening Experience. I Have Found That This Tutorial Is Really Useful And I Think That In Combination With The Rest Of The Editing Which I Am Going To Do It Will Make My Podcast Sound A Lot Better. Although I Haven’t Used Any Audio For This Practice, I Have Been Able To Get A Clearer Idea Of What I Need To Do And Where I Will Be Able To Find This So When I Go Onto Create My Podcast Editing This Will Be A Lot More Efficient.
Primary Research:
For My Primary Research I Have Decided To Two Pieces Which Are Both In Different Stages Of The Project. The First Thing That I Am Going To Do Is A Questionnaire In The Research Section And Then When I Get To The Pre-Production Section I Am Going To Do A Table Read For A Draft Version Of My Podcast.
I Have Decided To Do A Questionnaire As This Will Allow Me To Hear From The Audience What They Like And Dislike On All The Aspects Of My Show. This Was Quite A General Questionnaire, It Started With Getting To Know The Audience Member, Then It Went Into A Section About What Their Film Watching Habits Were, Their Knowledge On Directors And What They Wanted To Know About This. I Also Had A Section About Podcasts Asking What Their Podcast Listening Habits Were, What They Like And Dislike About Podcasts And What They Would Like To See In A Podcast. I Felt That This Would Be The Best Way To Use The Questionnaire As I Will Be Able To Have A General Idea What They Know Already So I Know What They Might Want To Learn And What To Do To Keep The Audience Engaged. This Will Then Go Onto Help Me Create A Podcast That Not Only Caters To My Target Audiences But Also With A Wider Audience.
Some Of The Useful Information That I Found Out While Doing This Questionnaire Include Some Of These Statistics:

Director And Film Related-

90% Of People Who Answered My Questionnaire Were Female

60% Of These People Watched Films Often

There Was A 50/50 Split Of Who Keeps Up To Date With Film News

The Main Reason For Not Keeping Up To Date With This, Is That They Don’t Have Enough Time To Do So

When Asked About Their Knowledge Of Directors On A Scale Of 1 To 5, The Majority Of People Chose A 2

Only 4 Out Of 10 People Could Name Five Directors

50% Of People Could Name A Female Director, The Most Popular Answer Was Greta Gerwig.

Everyone That Answered The Questionnaire Wanted To Learn More About Female Directors.

Only 4 Out Of 10 People Could Name A Horror Director

Some People Did Not Want To Learn More About Horror Directors As They Did Not Like Horror But Some People Did.

Only 2 Out Of 10 People Could Name A Neurodivergent Director

Some People Wanted To Learn More About Neurodivergent Directors

When Asked About What Else They Wanted To Know People Replied With Answers Like “How Their Directing Changes Each Film’ And “To Enable Decision Making Opportunities Related To Making Choices About Films To Watch”

Podcast Related-

There Was A 50/50 Split Of Who Listens To Podcasts And Who Doesn’t

There Was A Vary Of Different Genres Of The Podcasts That People Listened To, Some Examples Are Lifestyle, Entertainment And Sports.

When Asked About What Interests Them When Listening To A Podcast People Replied With Answers Like “Clear Structure,” “Learning New Things” And “Engaging Content”

When Asked About What Makes Them Lose Interest When Listening To A Podcast People Replied With Answers Like “If It Was Too Long,” “If The Narrator Was Unrelatable” And “If It Had Repetitive Content.

When Asked About Anything Else They Liked About Podcasts There Were A Vary Of Answers Like “How You Can Listen To A Podcast Anywhere At Any Time,” “How You Can Learn A Lot” And How You Can Find A Wide Range Of Topics”

When Asked About Anything Else That They Disliked About Podcasts There Were No Other Things That Could Be Thought Of.
Reflection-

Overall, I Felt That The Primary Research That I Have Done Will Be Helpful For When I Go Onto Create My Podcast. Doing This Allowed Me To Have A Better Idea Of What My Audience Thinks About Certain Aspects And How Much Knowledge They Have On This Topic. This Will Be Useful When I Go Onto Create My Podcast As I Now Know What I Should And Shouldn’t Add To My Podcast So That I Can Keep The Audience Engaged And Educated.
Theories:
Uses And Gratification Theory:
The Uses And Gratification Theory Was Created By Bulmer And Katz, The Theory States That The Audience Has An Active Role In Choosing The Media That They Consume. There Are Five Assumptions That Come With This Theory These Are “The Audience Is Conceived As Active,” “In The Mass Communication Process, Much Initiative In Linking Gratification And Media Choice Lies With The Audience Member,” “The Media Compete With Other Sources Of Satisfaction,” “Methodologically Speaking, Many Of The Goals Of Mass Media Use Can Be Derived From Data Supplied By Individual Audience Members Themselves” And “Value Judgements About The Cultural Significance Of Mass Communication Should Be Suspended While Audience Orientations Are Explored On Their Own Terms.” (Wikipedia, 2024). As Well As This There Are Five Different Reasons To Why People Choose To Consume Media These Include “To Be Informed Or Educated,” “Identify With Characters Of The Situation In The Media Environment,” “Simple Entertainment,” Enhance Social Interaction” And “Escape From The Stresses Of Daily Life.” (Wikipedia, 2024).
I Feel That I Can Use This Theory In My Own Podcast As It Allows Me To Be More Likely To Reach The Target Audience That I Have Chosen As I Will Be Able To See Where They Fit In This Theory And Then Have A Main Focus On This In My Podcast. I Think That The Best Fit To Focus On For My Podcast Would Be Both “To Be Informed And Engaged” And “Entertainment” (Wikipedia, 2024). I Feel That These Will Be The Best Reasons That Fit With My Podcast As I Want The Audience To Learn More About Different Directors And The Representational Issues That Surround Them But I Also Wanted The Audience To Feel Entertained By This. This Will Allow The Audience To Learn Some New Information But Be Able To Be Entertained While Doing This.
